Heavy rains flood Kuwait, public holiday announced

Kuwait, Nov 6 (Agencies): Kuwait Airways has announced that all scheduled flights to and from Kuwait International Airport will continue as scheduled and there are will be no cancelations.

Earlier this morning Kuwait Airways tweeted that all operations for Tuesday will be halted due to bad weather saying “in the interest of the safety of its employees and in accordance with the instructions of Kuwait cabinet, morning work shifts are suspended on Tuesday 6/11/2018 and its considered an official holiday.”

Kuwait has witnessed heavy rains in the past two days, which lead to heavy flooding across various areas of Kuwait.

The government has announced Tuesday to be a holiday for all ministries, public and private schools and universities in response to the heavy rains and flooding.

Interior Ministry in a statement issued last night has said that they are holding rescue operations in the flooded areas, evacuating people and children from buildings, closing roads and directing traffic away from flooded highways, and underpasses.

    It is amazing to witness torrential rains followed by thunder and lightening in and around Kuwait. Global Climate change is bringing chain of impacts all over the world, and therefore Middle Eastern countries are also included.

    God has His own mysterious ways to command the global climate. If the heavy rains continue to pour in the Middle East, it is obvious that God will help the desert countries to bloom and the lush green environment will blanket the region sooner or later.

    In addition to all the Pipelines and the smoke-stack industries, there will be hundreds of gardens with fresh flowers to blossom all over the place. The road systems will have to be re-designed with better and bigger drainage facilities so that all the rain water will flow towards the major reservoirs or dams, and eventually there might be even some rice fields might appear with good quality "Basmati" rice produced in and around Kuwait.

    More rain will be a gift for Kuwait from God.

    This country has an average of only 11" rainfall in a year. Yet the drainage system is well designed for normal rainfall like many cities in India. If the rain fall is sudden and non stop (as it happened in 2004), there will be flooding no doubt. But the Pumping systems clears the subways and low lying areas in few hours. Normal life returns next day.

    @Anil,

    Things didn't happen as we hoped for.

    Due to flooding it was chaos on roads, that is why many offices closed.

    Fact is, we don't have proper drainage and flood water management here.

    Shankar,

    In GCC countries usually, there are no rainwater drains because it hardly rains over there. It is very rare that it rains so much that it floods. This is one of the very few rare occasions.

    Now you can't say the same to Mangalore. We know it rains a lot over here. we know the drains have to be cleaned and cleared of any blockages before rainy season every year.

    There are no storm water drainage facilities in the gulf as they were not built considering the climate in the gulf. Hence flooding happens instantly. However in indian metros flooding happens due to construction taking place on the nallas meant for water to flow. If rains continue regularly in the gulf probably their oil might flow into other regions of the world

    I always thought Kuwait was a developed country but with one or two days of rain is enough to close Kuwait. Nothing great about Kuwait.
