Udupi, Nov 6: The team of Ravikiran and Srikanth won ‘Akasha Deepa’, the lantern designing competition organised for the first time by Kishoo Enterprises, Udupi franchise of Daijiworld Media (Web, Weekly, TV, Radio) in association with the Lions Club District 317C on November 4.
The team impressed the judges with their creative and eco- friendly goodudeepa. The lively event held at Catholic Sabha Church Hall on Sunday, November 5 in Udupi was inaugurated by Mother of Sorrows Church parish priest Fr Valerian Mendonca.
“Deepavali means moving from darkness to light. We should fill our lives with light, by shunning selfishness. We should be like the lamp that spreads light to its surrounding,” Fr Valerian said.
Ln Dr Thallur Shivaram Shetty, district governor, 317 C appreciated the unique programme. “Participation is more important than winning prizes. I appreciate the participant’s spirit of making goodudeepas. This is the best platform to showcase ones creativity,” he said.
Ln. Sanjeev T Karkera, secretary of District Lions said, “We have been organising such programmes to uphold harmony on the occasion of Deepavali. The main aim of this programme is to spread the messages of unity and integrity.”
One of the contestants, Amritha said, “We used to design goodudeepas during our schools. This competition is an amazing experience. I have the satisfaction of making eco-friendly goodudeepas. I thank the organizers for the opportunity.”
The winner of the competition, Ravikiran said, “We participated for the first time in the competition. We have been designing lamps since five years. Actually we need 5 hours to design a goodudeepa. We have used eco-friendly materials like clothes, ice-cream sticks, ribbon, and gum. It was nice to participate in this competition. This is good opportunity to showcase one's talent,” he said.
The guests distributed the prizes. The winners received trophy, certificate and cash prize Rs 5000. Nagendra Kota bagged second prize, Girish and Nuzaif won the third prize. They were awarded with trophy, certificate and Rs 3000 and Rs 2000 respectively. Consolation prizes were given to ten contestants.
Many participated in the creative competition. The participants have designed goodudeepa by using paper cups, clothes, paddy, arecanuts and so on. A contestant, who designed a shivalinga goodudeepa, was appreciated for the creative design.
Ln Girija Shivaram Shetty Thallur, first lady of district lions 317C, Kevin Rodrigues, manager, Daijiworld Udupi news bureau, Satish Shetty, cultural coordinator, Sunil Shetty, PRO, International Lions, Ln Nery Cornolio, Lions regional manager and others were present.
Ln Sadhana Kini, district programme coordinator welcomed the gathering. Ln Meti Mudiyappa compered the inaugural stage function.
Akshata Girish compered the valedictory ceremony function. Umesh Marpalli extended welcome and Ln Sadhana Kini proposed vote of thanks.
