Mangaluru: Protest held against MRPL’s land acquisition for expansion

Mangaluru Oct 5: Karavali Karnataka Janabhivriddhi Forum and Krishi Bhoomi Samrakshana Samithi staged a protest at DC office here on Monday, November 5, against MRPL over the proposed land acquisition for the expansion of its refinery.

MRPL is all set to expand its refinery and this move has left the people of surrounding areas in deep concern of losing their land for the refinery expansion, the protestors said.

In addition to demanding the withdrawal of the expansion of MRPL refinery, the forum also said that due to this expansion, the people will undergo a lot of issues. “It will pollute the environment and may even cause tragedy in future,” the forum said.

The forum also condemned the move made by MRPL to acquire land through KIADB (Karnataka Industrial area development board).

A memorandum in this regard was handed over to the Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil by the forum, who assured to review the matter.

    we have to respect public intrest and public heath , destroying cultivation land expanding a refinery in cultivation land will be a tragedy in the name of developement...we do not want this MRPL project ....let they develop the refinery in gujarath .

    Locals ge job kododu astrlalli ide....first stop these nonsense. In the name of Development these peoples are selling the Land of poor peoples into industrialists. These is no use for Locals. Maximum jobs are occupied by Northies etc. then y the hell we need to give our land for these industrialists. Only pollution Increases.

    Industries has crossed our "carrying capacity", a Gadgil expression which requires a deeper understanding of coastal belt. Ecology and livelihood of people are damaged irreversibly with ulterior motifs. Doubts among the residents on earlier forced acquisition and utilization has not been answered satisfactorily. As such, this acquisition can wait till the questions raised by the protesters are answered convincingly. First of all, the Executive enjoy powers delegated by President of India and they derive pleasure by deploying it without limits towards acquiring fertile land far more than required for the purpose. Secondly, fixing compensation is arbitrary and woven with thick threads of corruption. Visit the MRPL site and around to feel the contrast. The residents within the plant is leading a life of bounty in terms of resources like land, water and greenery while the peasants around leads a life of abject penury. More than 80% of the land acquired on the graveyard of farmers are utilized for luxury in terms of lung-space, greenery and playgrounds and per head land space exceeds 300-400 square meters within the plant premises. Please note, these luxury are built up on the fertile land forcibly acquired from farmers, with forcibly relocating them to rocky terrains around, leaving the benefactors at the mercy of beneficiaries. With a dam at Shamboor, their need for water is ensured 24X7 at exclusive cost of city dwellers. Majority of workforce is imported from elsewhere and sons of the soils are not provided adequate representation either as a matter of of reciprocity or as a social and economic justice. Land is a scarce natural resource and, not being elastic to the functions of demand, calls for more prudent utilization, duly considering the sentiments of the farmers tilling and struggling day in and out to meet both ends. Once again, Mr. T. R. Bhat has stood in the forefront in protest on a burning issue pertaining to local farming community and my best wishes.

    Drive that MRPL out from Mangalore. It is a pollution industry where our farmers are losing all land to this poisoning industry. People don't even give your land. Enough is enough.

    Apart from expansion there is no employment to the local people plus degrading the environment, flora, fauna, aqua life. The protest should be more vigorous, all from Udupi, Dakshina Kannada need to support this protest.

    There was a proposal to acquire land between Durgamahal hotel and Bokkapatna church in Mangalore for road widening, we residents got together and showed the concerned authorities the rules and also what is the punishment for flouting the Land Acquisition Act 2013 .The concerned authority had to drop the proposal. Our land remains with us, we won the fight without even going to court.

    Good monty, similar protest happend in Udupi manipal road , padubidri highway also. Ofcourse project got delayed but finally road work continued as proposed before.
    A nation wide protest happend against Nagarjuna now Adani power nothing happend everything runimg better than original plan. All leaderz and political peoples enjoying in their luxory houses with undertable money but we peoples arround that powerplant" frighting on every lighting" because the intensity is very high, cost many lives of animals, peoples, trees, no one there now to listen our problems. No BJP, No MODI, no congress, no any dala's.

    No one is against development. But the state government which is acquiring land for MRPL should pay 3 times the market value(not guidance value) for the land. It has to be acquired according to the Land Acquisition Act 2013 as it is an act of Parliament and has primacy over all other land acquisition acts of the state and central government.
