Kasargod, Nov 5: The first class judicial magistrate's court here has levied a fine of Rs 3,000 each on 20 Kannadigas. They were found guilty and fined for laying siege to the office of the district collector here on May 23, 2017, in protest against the order of Kerala government making it compulsory for Kannada students to study Malayalam language as a mandatory subject from first standard onward.
The police had invoked sections of law relating to unlawful assembly, failing to obey lawful orders of the police, blocking vehicular traffic on the road and obstructing police personnel from discharging their duties. Congress district president, Hakeem Kunnil, BJP district president, K Shrikanth, Prameela C Naik, A K M Ashraf, Balakrishna Shetty, Raveesh Tantry Kuntaru, Harshad Vorkady, Saifulla Tangal, Avinash, Somashekhar, Preethi, Bhaskar K, Madhava Master, Jayant Patali, Z A Kayyar, Krishna Bhat, M Umesh Salian, Balakrishna Vorkudlu, and Radhakrishna K Uliyathadka are among those who face the fine. On their behalf, the advocate remitted the fine amount imposed on them to the court.
