Udupi, Nov 14: The court of Additional Civil Judge (Junior division) and Judicial Magistrate First Class in Kundapur on Thursday convicted Chennamma, who was arrested on charges of naxalite activities on February 13, 2007, for six months’ imprisonment. However, since Chennamma was in custody for 20 months, judge K.G. Chintha ordered her release from the jail.

Advocate B. Prakashchandra Hegde, who represented Chennamma in the court, told The Hindu that Ms. Chennamma had been arrested by the police at Amasebail, near Kundapur, coming under Shankarnarayana Police limits, on February 13, 2007, on charges of involvement in naxalite activitites. At present, she was facing charges of unlawful assembly, rioting and dealing with deadly weapon, criminal trespass, damaging public property and giving life threat (Sections 143, 147, 448, 427 and 506 read with 149 of IPC).

He said that the court convicted Ms. Chennamma for a six-month term in jail. However, since Ms. Chennamma was in custody for 20 months, judge K.G. Chintha ordered that Chennamma be released on Friday from the jail in Mysore. Ms. Chennamma had been acquitted in other cases by the courts in Udupi earlier, Mr. Hegde said.
