Mangaluru: Leaders ask Congress to field Muslim candidate in MP election

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Oct 25: A meeting of Muslim political, social and religious leaders held at the mini hall of the town hall here on Wednesday October 24, pitched for fielding a Muslim candidate by the Congress in the ensuing Lok Sabha election.

The meeting was organized under the aegis of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district Muslim Central Committee and action committee of Mangaluru Lok Sabha constituency. It was presided over by the president of Central Committee, M S Mohammed Masood.

Masood in his address felt that Congress should have offered Lok Sabha candidature of the local constituency here to Muslims long back. "We have been putting forth this demand rightfully after 70 years of independence. It is the responsibility of the party to meet our justified demand," he said. He said that the sub-committee will decide about the candidate and make an announcement about the same. He asked Congress party to convey its decision before November 30, adding that the Muslim leaders will announce their final decision at a convention being organized at Nehru Maidan here on December 15.

Masood stated that awareness in this respect among the people would be created with the support of Congress, JD(S), Muslim leaders of leftist parties, heads of different Muslim sects and organizations, and sought support o all the Congressmen.

Advocate, Muzafar Ahmed, noted that Janardhana Poojary, Ramanath Rai etc had been supported and established by the Muslims but now the situation has come to such a pass that the Muslims are forced to beg even for zilla panchayat, taluk panchayat and gram panchayat tickets.

Former MP, B Ibrahim, former MLA, Moideen Bava, former mayor, K Ashraf, SDPI district president, Athaullah Jokatte, JD(S) leader, Hyder Parthipadi, Jamaat-e-Islam-e-Hind president, Muhammed Kunhi, Congress leader, G A Bawa and zilla panchayat member, Shahul Hameed, also spoke on the occasion.

Leaders like B H Khader, S M Rashid, T M Shahid, Abdurrauf Puttige, Abdul Aziz Kudroli, Saed Ismail and others were present.

Former chairman of Mangalore Urban Development Authority, Kodijal Ibrahim, welcomed, Haneef Khan Kodaje presented the programme. Nooruddin Salmara proposed vote of thanks.

This is a good move by Muslims as we have been supporting Congress blindly and if given a chance we can see where we stand as a community and see if we get support from the so called Congress persons.

There were candidates who lost due to people of their own communities who did not vote for them and we all know how BJP won and what will be their slogan for the coming General elections. We as Muslims should take a chance and see if we can be united and if not then we should support the next best candidate.

We have been supporting candidates not based on caste or religion and this time Congress should give Muslims a chance. Who knows what will happen as miracles do happen in politics and there are numerous examples. This is a positive step taken by the community leaders and hope that political parties take a note of this. There are only 7 Congress MLA`s elected in Karnataka which has 13% Muslims so this shows that we do not have the backing of other communities

Muslim population of karnatak required at least 3 out of 28 MP seats representation in parliament from the state, but present zero. So we need this time Mangalore for Muslim Candidate. Any how congress not win from Mangalore but not bad to try with Muslim Candidate.

I’ m pretty certain that the ground level situation has recently changed in Udupi and Mangalore, In present situation the votes are caste upon Candidate’s caste, religious, muscle power, Money etc . and accordingly majority of votes are casted on such polarization, which is against the well founded ethos of a healthy democracy. The facts like development, welfare, character, capability, performance & genuine credibility of the candidate, had sadly taken back seat in our regional politics.

First of all let me remind these so called Muslim leaders that nominating a non-Hindu candidate for these two MP constituencies will be obviously a futile attempt, as the situation is not conducive and even if done, it will be cakewalk for BJP candidate, who may not a person of high calibre or credible performer.

Strategically speaking, though the wining chances are very bleak in the present condition against BJP, However congress can only pose a challenge and take a slight chance of winning by nominating a solid Hindu candidate who is secular, person of character, financially capable , did some wonderful job as temple trustee or a good Hindu Leader, acceptable to all Hindu communities and other prominent religions, who also has charisma of attracting votes with his or her strong prominent community background.

I am not the supporter of any political party however I respectfully urge the right thinking voters of constituency to cast their votes to the most capable and performing candidate, who can serve the people without any bias and which is a critical factor in healthy democracy, moreover overall welfare of the country in general and constituency in particular are to be set as a bench mark while casting our valuable votes.

Let us be proud to be an Indian and construct a healthy Indian society, where everyone will have a dignified Life.

I planned file a PIL, making the Election commission as a party to the matter and thereby urging the Hon’ble court to give direction to the all respective political parties and Election commission to make it mandatory to publish candidate’s own manifesto for the constituency he or she represents and contesting, and must declare that his or her knowledge about representing and contesting constituency , public works pending in the said constituency , proposed to be carried out in the next tenure of 5 years, if she or he is wins the election and finally the winning candidate shall be accountable for such promised manifesto in the personal capacity and liable for action.

541This is not going to be done for extra popularity but to serve the nation and I personally urge and invite the right thinking readers of the daijiworld may also join me in this initiation

Any organisation or association which has a tag of religion are as good as communal. Here I am sure, some members are non Congress political party members and few of them amongst them are ex Congress joined other political party, who should not interfere in Congress party affairs.

Also I got a doubt, amongst them many are underhand understanding with the BJP. I will not be surprised, these so called religious body may field a candidate to divide Congress vote. Same like Owasis who is behind the scene is supported by BJP.

So, like other communal body, this is also a communal body as these religious tag body and leaders are interfering in the matter of political parties.

If possible come up with common candidate who should be young , dynamic and know the pain of general public instead of looking for Muslim tag. Wher Muslims are in deciding factor ther demand for Muslim candidates.
Give opportunity to new dynamic youngsters instead of banking on family politics. Even in Ullal change the candidates for next time . Since long time one family tries to capture all.

I dont think you will win. The simple reason is Cong is going the 'hindutva' way to woo majority communities everywhere. The fully publicised temple runs, manasasrovar visit. poster depicting RaGa pouring milk over a shiv ling is a clear sign where Cong is heading to for survival. Its better for Cong to merge with JDS to fight a common enemy.

No. Definitely not a good idea.
Muslim candidate can never win a Loksabha election in Mangalore.
Moreover the Congress, being a secular party should not consider religion of the candidate as a criterion.
Give ticket to some young, active and honest person.
I think Mithun Rai will be a good choice.
