Dubai, Oct 23: SMMC’s Konkani annual drama of this year ‘Sikeram Driver’ staged on October 19 at the Bishop Bernard Gremoli Hall of St Mary’s Church Dubai witnessed huge gathering at the venue with great appreciation.
Event started at 7:45 pm with the brief introduction by one of Dubai’s young and exuberant compere Vernon D’Souza. Stage programme initiated with SMMC coordinator Jerina Lewis and co-coordinator Joseph Mathias escorting the main guests Fr Lennie Connolly, parish priest of St Mary’s Church Dubai and spiritual director Fr Robert Lasrado to the stage. Joseph Mathias rendered profound welcome to all and main guests on the stage were felicitated by flower bouquets by the SMMC core committee members.
Fr Lennie in his speech explained the importance of cultural programmes to bring unity in the community. Fr Robert explained about SMMC’s efforts to provide genuine entertainment to the community through its various programmes throughout the year. Sponsors of the event - Globelink West Star Shipping, James and Shobha Mendonca of Reliable Fabrication LLC, Leo D’Souza of Canara Restaurant, Rudolf Sanctis of RAK Middle East Traders LLC, Proton Electronics Trading LLC and Speed Star Cargo LLC were honoured with mementos presented by Fr Lennie Connolly. SMMC core member Josly Pinto conveyed the vote of thanks.
ABCD Dance Studio members displayed distinctive prayer dance in the beginning. Drama ‘Sikeram Driver’ commenced with various characters depicting excellent acting skills. Famous dramatist late Mick Max’s award winning creation ‘Sikeram Driver’ has been well known for best script. Each actor did full justification to their stage characters. It was very much evident with the claps, laughs and whistles that audiences were enjoying every moment till the end. After the conclusion of drama, each artiste and supporters were honoured for their service with mementos by Fr Robert Lasrado.
As for the artistes, Robert Mendonca as mentally challenged son, Cleevon Mendonca as angry and jobless son surprised the audience with their inbuilt acting skills. Established actors Vincy Lobo, Cynthia Mendonca did complete justification to their respective roles. Comedian Sunil Suvarna brought riots of laughter with his superb comedy. Proven actress Asha Correa was delightful to watch. But it was clear that the top honour and mounts of appreciation belonged to Dony Correa that night, who directed the drama and portrayed the main character Sikeram. Dony’s superb dialogue delivery and apt acting captivated the hearts of spectators. Melvin and Rohan Kalakul’s fantastic music added zest to the drama. Brilliant stage, light and sound setting by Broadway Event Management also contributed to the success of the drama.
SMMC said that it will look forward to organise such events in future, with the support of well-wishers and Konkani community, which will provide not only entertainment to the families, but definitely will revive in people, affinity towards Konkani culture.
