New Delhi, Oct 22: Speculations are rife that BJP is likely to rope in former Indian Cricket captain MS Dhoni and veteran batsman Gautam Gambhir as candidates from Jharkhand and Delhi respectively, in the upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
According to a report in The Sunday Gaurdian, BJP is all set to announce the two cricketers as star campaigners and a senior BJP leader reveals that Dhoni is being persuaded to contest from a seat in his home-state Jharkhand.
Dhoni who is also the captain of Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League, enjoys a huge fan base in South India, especially the AIADMK-ruled Tamil Nadu, which the BJP hopes to tap on.
Meanwhile, sources reveal that Gambhir will most likely replace Delhi MP Meenakshi Lekhi. It is said that people from her constituency are not happy with her work and Gambhir who hails from Delhi will have better chances if he contests from the same seat.
Gambhir is famed for his social work and is one of the respectable cricketers. The source adds that Gambhir will be an asset to the party and give BJP the required push in the national capital which is a bastion of Aam Aadmi Party.
However, it is speculated if Dhoni will contest the election as the cricketer who has not yet retired from international cricket has set his focus on the 2019 Cricket World Cup.
