Udupi, Nov 8: Jayasrikrishna Parisara Premi Samiti president Thonse Jayakrishna Shetty in a press conference held here, has urged Nagarjuna Thermal Power Plant coming up near Padubidri in the district, to earmark a portion of the power generated in its unit, exclusively for the consumption of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts, so that the citizens of the district are spared of the problem of frequent power cuts. He also informed that a similar demand was also placed before the state energy minister K S Eshwarappa.
A memorandum containing the above demand was handed over to K S Eshwarappa during his visit to participate in 'Chandika' oblation held at Kollur Mookambika Temple. In this connection, the minister held discussions with the secretary of energy department and is expected to take certain measures to consider the request favourably, Shetty said.
"In 2010, the Nagarjuna power plant will commence operations and 30% of the electricity produced should be reserved for the Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts. Through this we can respect and recognize the sacrifices made by the people of the region. The two districts require about 300 mega watts of electricity and it must be provided,” he said.
The Jayasrikrishna Parisara Premi Samiti stood by the Nagarjuna company during the times the project faced strong opposition, and as a result, the unit is able to proceed towards getting completed and start power generation, the Samiti reminded the minister on the occasion, he said.
Office-bearers of the Samiti Prof Shankar, Anand Ganiga, Surendra Mendon, Balakrishna Bhandary, Dr Prabhakar Shetty and Ranjan Shetty were present.
