Mangaluru, Oct 17: Different parts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts received good rains late night on Monday and again on Tuesday afternoon, evening and night.
Some parts of the coastal area received good rain along with lightning and thunder. The city and surrounding areas, which were enveloped in clouds since the afternoon on Tuesday got rainfall in the evening. The rain affected cultural programmes organized at various places on account of Navaratri and Sharada Mahotsava.
Heavy rains were reported from several places in Udupi and Kundapur taluks on Tuesday afternoon. Halady, Tekkatte, Kollur, Padubidri and Karkala were among the places which got very good rainfall for about two hours. The meteorological department has already predicted rainfall to continue till October 18.
After lightning struck three houses at Mudrady Bakre near Hebri, wiring and electrical equipment were burnt down. Family members however escaped with minor injuries. The houses which were affected belong to Bhoja Poojary, Susheela Poojary and Jayakar Naik. Lightning which struck the telephone exchange at Alankaru, Koila, resulted in burning of equipment as a result of which landline phones and mobile phones went dead and internet connection was severed. Engineer of the centre, Vinuth, said that repair work is on and it might take two days for the centre to become operational.
A house belonging to Pandurang Ameen, residing near Lord Laxmi Janardana temple at Elinje, Kinnigoli died due to lightning. A cow was valued at around Rs 30,000.

Kasargod district too got good rain with thunder and lightning on Tuesday for about 90 minutes. Almost all the places on the coast reported good rain. Traffic was obstructed after mud from the hillock slid down and blocked the road at Kunnungai. Several areas in this district reported power outages.
