Bengaluru: Petition against Tipu Jayanti - HC asks government to file objections

Bengaluru, Oct 12: The state high court (HC), on Thursday October 11, asked the state government to file objections relating to dispute over the celebration of Tipu Sultan's birth anniversary by the state government. The government has been given three weeks time to do so.

A resident of Haisodlur, Madikeri in Kodagu district, K P Manjunath alias Manjunath Channappa, has filed public interest litigation seeking directions to the state government against celebrating Tipu Jayanti as an official festival. A division bench of the HC presided over by Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice S G Pandit adjourned the hearing after instructing the government advocate to file objections if any.

K P Manjunath, through his litigation, has sought to revoke a circular issued by the director in the department of Kannada and Culture last year to celebrate Tipu Jayanti all over the state.

    Dear readers ... isnt celebrating birthdays in Islam banned... even when the state govt celebrates it... ???even in china people know that tippu was a muderer ...your vijay mallya was just trying to show off by buying the sword back with peoples money...he ultimately put a sword in the backs of many of his employees..
    The state govt is rubbing salt of the wounds of a certain category of people then no chance a state will flourish with this mentality...

    Celebrating Tippus jayanti is like rubbing salt on the wounds of the descendents of the those who were tortured and killed ruthlessly by the tyrant who usurped the crown with deceit. Tippu should top the hall of shame if there is list of murders and tyrants along with Id Amin and Cannibal Jean abdel Bokkassa.

    Why has the HC admitted the petition against TJ. It should have been dismissed. It is a secular country. It is time the HC gives time to important cases.

    Why Siddha Govt. wasted time in initiating TJ instead of paying attention to important issues like farmers’ debts? Doesn't he know India is a secular country and Tipu is a controversial figure in history?

    Tippu is nothing but a mini Hitler.

    He has killed more than 60,000 catholics of Dakshina Kannada who are our own brothers and sisters of Tulunadu.

    At least we as Dakshina Kannadiagas should not celebrate this tyrant's birthday at all. However, certain eunuchs in the Christian community, holding political positions, do not have the guts to say this.

    Celebrating Tippu Jayanthi should be stopped immediately. Yes he was a brave king but notorious, ruthless and barbaric too. We don't want our next generation to hail him as a hero when thousands were murdered and raped under his command. Tippu only fought to keep his kingdom safe.
