Mysuru: MP Pratap Simha urges chief minister to stop celebration of Tipu Jayanti

Mysuru, Oct 10: “Celebration of Tipu Jayanti is against the culture of the land. Though JD(S)-Congress is a coalition government, celebration of Tipu Jayanti should be stopped,” urged Mysuru-Kodagu constituency MP Pratap Simha.

Speaking at a programme after offering puja to Chamudi deity and inaugurating Dasara, he said that the celebrations of Dasara is a gift of Mysuru Arasas.

“Tipu Sultan was responsible for the blood shed of such a family. Respect Mysuru kings at least now. Stop Tipu Jayanti at least during your term,” he requested chief minister Kumaraswamy who was on the dais.

    If Tipu Jayanti need to stop celebrated who fought British, then late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajypayee celebration should also need to be reconsidered because of his betrayal to India for not participating in 'Quit India' movement.

    Since 2015 when the Congress government started celebrating Tipu Jayanti, the BJP has been opposed to the idea and they have criticised the celebrations claiming that Tipu was a 'terrorist' and that he persecuted Kodavas and Catholics in Mangaluru. The BJP have pitted Tipu against Onake Obavva, a legendary Dalit woman who died fighting his father, Hyder Ali, when he invaded the Chitradurga Fort.

    The report claims that the BJP was not always opposed to these celebrations.BJP's stance protesting Tipu celebrations in the state is a "political gimmick". "Tipu Jayanti existed even before 2015. It was just not a state-sponsored celebration then. There are pictures of Jagadish Shettar, Yeddyurappa, R Ashok and other BJP leaders celebrating Tipu Jayanti. They are wearing Tipu-style turbans. They may claim that it was an Iftar party but these pictures were clicked before 2015 and they were at functions organised by the Muslim community. These were Tipu Jayanti functions.
    It is sad that politics has turned Tipu into a divisive historical figure. Like many other 18th Century rulers, he was not a democrat, did indulge in oppression but was not a communal bigot he is made out to be. Even celebrations of historical figures are politically motivated.
    In the past BJP MP from Mysuru abusive comments made about Kittur Rani Chennamma, Belavadi Mallamma and Onake Obavva, by those claiming to be his followers. The three women allegedly abused are popular warriors. He also once compared DU Student Gurmehar Kaur With Dawood Ibrahim martyr of Kargil war.

    Yes Tipu killed so many British troops & their supporting people for the sake of Mysore and not to pay royalty to them.
    If you all feel he was against other religion why there is a big temple at the entrance of his fort gate and poornaia was his prime minister.
    We all studies mysore history since our childhood, One should not change the history for political benefit.

    In Maharashtra only Shiv Sena and MNS celebrate Shivaji Jayanthi. It is not a state celebration. Likewise in Karnataka Congress can celebrate Tipu Jayanthi as a party event, not as a state celebration.

    Tipu fought the British only to save his kingdom and sovereignty ..... there was no intention of freedom fight, when majority of people do not want to celebrate his jayanti, government cannot impose doing so .... Entire history of Indian freedom struggle is written on biased.
