Mangaluru, Oct 4: Heavy rains lashed Mangaluru and surrounding places on Thursday October 4.

The rains began at around 4.00 pm leaving the city in a shambles with non-stop showers. The skies in the city remained engulfed in dark clouds with predictions of more rains in next few hours.

Earlier the meteorological department had forecast the possibility of a low pressure area building up above the Arabian Sea turning into cyclonic storm and hitting coastal Karnataka. It had predicted heavy rainfall in south India and coastal areas of Karnataka. It had also advised fishermen who are in the sea at present to rush back to the shore before October 5.

The department had stated that because of the slump in air pressure over the sea, the sea will turn turbulent and waves will gain enormous size and power. It had asked the fishermen to stay away from activities in the sea from October 5 to 10.

The vehicles in city are moving with lights on due to darkness.

The children from schools are yet to reach home due to the rains.

The weather was cloudy since 3 pm.

If Meteorological department says 'cyclone' it is like Modi told 15 lakhs. When Raja is Feku then his Praja is also Feku. What to do it is our GOOD LUCK I have to say now. That is why we are facing water after water problems.

Meteorological department needs to be careful in using words like 'cyclone' which causes fear and leads to unnecessary panic. If its a heavy thunderstorm, then just state 'heavy thunderstorm'; there is no need to be dramatic.

Irrespective of who was managing the city corporation all these years the drainage system in Mangalore is miserable. The roads get flooded within 15/30 minutes of rain and the drains start overflowing. Roads are cut and never repaired resulting in trenches on major roads. The sad thing is authorities as well as citizens don't care and they consider it's part of their life and carry on. People become agitated and start protesting only for non issues like changing names of roads and for curtailing Dasara holidays and so on.
