Mangalore, Nov 3: Addressing a national-level workshop on 'Redefining Educational Objectives' in the city on Sunday November 2, Gulbarga University vice-chancellor Prof B G Moolimani inferred that patriotism does not mean loving one's country by hating or harming others.
The programme was organized by the Association for Promotion of Non-violence and Humanism and College for Leadership and Human Resource Development.
The vice-chancellor opined that regionalism in the interest of development of that region cannot be termed as undesirable. Development of the region should be on the lines of Sir Visweswaraiah, who worked for the betterment of his region alone, he said and asked the students to be well-versed with cultural background, resources, reasons for backwardness etc., of their respective regions. "The students should always keep thinking about ways and means to contribute for the development of their regions," he asserted.
Moolimani lamented the fact that the youngsters forget their roots, language and culture once they immigrate to some other region. Because a sense of belonging is lost, we see frequent fights for the cause of languages, he reasoned. He also opined that a subject on the region should be included in the academic curriculum.
About the higher education scenario, the vice-chancellor opined that it has become a sick child because of political interference. As political parties influence elections in universities, they try to impose their own political ideologies on them, he added. "Therefore, universities should educate students on political ideologies," he felt.
