Kasargod, Oct 1: Excise and Customs officials in a quick operation here, confiscated hawala cash worth Rs 1.2 crore and 1.5 kg gold and arrested two suspects in this regard on Monday, October 1.
The arrested have been identified as Talengere resident Bashir (60) and Maharashtra Sangli resident Ramachandra Patil (27).
Excise and Customs sleuths in Kasargod and Kannur, on receiving definite information, intercepted a car heading to Kasargod from Mangaluru. On checking the vehicle, they found Rs 1.2 crore cash in it. The cash was hidden inside a hole made in the seat of the car. The officials conducted further raids on a rented house on Kote road, Kasargod on the basis of information obtained from Basheer and confiscated 1.5 kg gold found there. Ramachandra Patil who was in the house was arrested.
Excise and Customs officials had received clues three days ago and they had kept an eye on the car. Basheer, while questioning reportedly said that a person named Ravi in Mangaluru had asked to take the car to Kasargod and also that he did not know that there was cash in it.
According to officials, they have retrieved information from the arrested that the gang operates with Mumbai as the centre. Therefore, investigation is extended to Mumbai. The officials said that more details will be available if the person who sent the money is nabbed. It is suspected that Ravi has fled to Mumbai. Excise and Customs officials are looking into the issue.
