Mangaluru: Effect of rising fuel prices - fishing industry in distress

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Oct 1: If the present trend of rising petrol and diesel prices is not brought under control, it may severely affect the fishing industry of the coastal region. Many boats have been already anchored in the jetty as they are unable to bear the high cost of the fuel that is required to carry on fishing.

If the rising fuel prices are hampering the business of large-scale fishing, the country boats which run on kerosene oil are on the verge of completely stalling their business due to the shortage as well as no-availability of subsidy on kerosene. Traditional fishermen were given kerosene on a subsidized price for the last many years. However, due to the change of Public Distribution System (PDS) of the central government in which the use of kerosene was strictly limited to domestic cooking purpose only. This increased the woes of country boat fishermen.

Traditional fishing suffers the most

State government used to supply kerosene at a subsidized rate to the traditional fishermen in the last two years. However, the fishermen have not received the same this year. More than 50% of the traditional fishermen have stopped fishing for the same reason. If the government does not wake up and supply kerosene at a subsidized price, then the traditional fishing will, for sure, stop within a few days.

The government is asking the traditional fishermen to convert their engines from kerosene to diesel due to the non-availability of kerosene and also for the fact the central PDS policy does not allow the kerosene to be used for any purpose other than cooking. However, the cost of converting a kerosene engine to diesel one is about Rs 1.75 lac. In addition, the maintenance of a diesel engine will be costlier compared to an engine that runs on kerosene. The traditional fishermen, who use country boats, feel that they will be unable to bear the high maintenance cost of the diesel engine.

Fishing organizations to hold a meeting

A meeting of the representatives of the West Coast States' Fishermen Associations is organized on Monday, October 1 at Goa in order to discuss the issues and demands of the mechanical and traditional boat fishermen and to take further action in this matter. Karnataka Coastal Fishermen's' Action Committee also held an emergency meeting on Sunday, September 30 to discuss the issues faced. The office bearers of the association will participate in the meeting that will be held in Goa.

Manohar Boloor, president of Coastal Fishermen's Action Committee, says "Due to the incessant rise in the diesel and petrol prices, it has become virtually impossible to carry on the business of fishing. Many of the fishing boats have stopped fishing and are anchored in the jetty. The government should respond to our situation and save the fisheries industry. The meeting of West Coast States' Fishermen's Association will discuss this matter in Goa."

Subhaschandra Kanchan, president of Gill Net Fishermen's Association, said, "The traditional country boat fishing is on the verge of getting extinct completely due to the stoppage of subsidized kerosene. The livelihood of lacs of fishermen who are directly and indirectly involved in the traditional fishing is in danger. Government has to supply subsidized kerosene as soon as possible and save the traditional country boat fishing,"

Everyday price increase has proved that BJP equals ‘Bahut Jyada Price’ after LPG, CNG price hike.

International crude oil prices have reduced by 40% since the Modi Government came to power. The price of crude was $107.09/barrel in May 2014 and is presently at $73/barrel. The average price per barrel of crude during the past 52 months has been $50 per barrel, ie nearly 55% less than it was during the tenure of the previous Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government. Yet prices of petrol and diesel continue to rise during the Modi Government.

Since May 2014, the Modi Government has increased ‘Central Excise Duty’ 12 times, on petrol by 211% and on diesel by 443% and customs duty has been increased manifold, leading to a ₹12 lakh crore "fuel loot”.
1.Why the central government can’t roll-back excise and customs duty to provide the people relief of ₹10-15 per litre?
    2. Why the petrol and diesel can't be under the ambit of the Goods and Services Tax (GST)?
    3. Where is all that ₹12 lakh crore "fuel loot” has gone?

In the past demonetization has killed many citizen's of India. Then compulsory Aadhar Card due to malnutrition. Now fuel prices are killing Indians without poison.

Whatever all say ........... Modi will win 2019............ Just watch!!!

Look at the inauguration sprees he is on, look at the media coverage he gets, look at the feel good factor he is pouring in to people, look at his tactics, look at the budgets he is using, look at the issues he is targeting like having a dedicated cow minister........

You think any of our people care about prices, dollar vs rupee, rafale deal, Jr Shah, Adani, Ambani ................... All they can see their culture is under attack by the same people whom they have been celebrating Diwali, Eid, Christmas all these years.

Its sad that today we see our own fellow Indian as our enemy....... why worry about Pakistan or China..........

Our biggest threat and enemy today is our next door neighbor and if Modi wins they feel secure........... Such is the perception............. In such a state or perception ONLY MODI can win and nobody else

    Wah Modiji wah!!!
    Nothing else matters........... MIND IT!!!!

And the children of these very fishermen are roaming around, posting on FB and Twitter that they will support Modi even if the petrol/diesel prices are made Rs 800 per litre! Isn't it arrogance? You need subsidy from the govt on fuel for your boats and then your children are boasting that they are ready to pay even Rs 800 per litre of fuel. If your children have so much money, why ask for subsidy from the govt? Karnataka gives highest amount of subsidy on diesel for fishermen in the entire country. This is also the only state where subsidies are directly credited to the accounts of boat owners. Right now Karnataka government is giving subsidy to 3600 fishing boats. Pramodh Madhwaraj did a great job in getting these facilities for fisheries community. What did he get in return? And now these very people are queuing up against his office and home seeking help for their boats, for the studies of their children, for constructing houses, marriages etc. Such ungratefulness.

They got charbi because they made lots of money. Everything free they need. Ignored their own brother from Malpe and voted others. Madhwaraj and family supported these folks in their difficult time. Now crying for what. If the fuel price and other cost rise in the same ration. Days are not far they carry buckets of fish on their head and sell the fish again. People wake up our neighbours and other communities are reason for our rise. We think we are strong and our politeness is gone. Karma will haunt us.

All fish meal hotels, across the coastal districts are minting money.

Demand for fish delicacy are rising.

Instead of stopping fishing, they should venture into eatery business too.

Fishermen are the lifeline of our coastal district and the state government should provide Tax free environment for sustenance of this industry.

Why tax free for them? They earn in lakhs when they go to fishing. Gone are those days when fishermen used to work for salaries, now all of them are working on partnership. It's a rule to work on partnership basis.

Everybody is working hard, some with hands and limbs and some with brains, so should everybody get tax exemption

When the international petrol price was $150/barrel, the UPA Government ensured the retail price in India was about Rs 75.

Now the international petrol price is less than $75/barrel. But the retail proce has crossed Rs 90!

Why are people not waking up and booting this Government out?
