Udupi, Nov 2: Members of the district unit of Janata Dal (Secular) began an indefinite fast in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Saturday to protest against the alleged anti-people policies of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the State and non-implementation of development projects in Udupi district.
But District Commissioner Hemalatha visited the fasting members in the evening and assured them of the implementation of the projects and other demands after which they called off their agitation.
President of the district unit of Janata Dal (S) Deviprasad Shetty said that the BJP Government was spending most of its time in making tall promises. There was hardly any development activity taking place in the State.
"Despite assurances by Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa that Government officials would not be transferred, the BJP government had been transferring officials recklessly," he said.
He said that the law and order situation in the State had crumbled.
The development activities had come to a standstill in the district. Home Minister V.S. Acharya, who is also in-charge of Udupi district, was making misleading statements about development projects. The public distribution system was in a mess, he said.
