Gadag, Sep 27: In a shocking incident which happened in Basapur village, Gadag taluk, on Wednesday September 25, a couple who had entered into inter-religious marriage, was bludgeoned to death with a hammer.
The victims of this incident were Ashraf Ali (45) and his wife, Somavva (38). They had fallen in love and married 12 years back, and deserted their village, it is said. The couple has two children.
Somavva's brother, Devappa, is the murder-accused. After the murders, he surrendered in the police station, it is learnt. District superintendent of police, Santosh Babu, visited the village. A case stands registered in Basapur police station relating to these two deaths.
After their marriage, Somavva and Ashraf had settled down in Mulgund, four km away from Basapur. It is said that Somavva came to Basapur on Wednesday along with her husband and sought share in ancestral property. Angered by the demand, Somavva's brother indiscriminately attacked the couple with a hammer. Both of them, who suffered deep injuries, died on the spot, it is said.
Devappa surrendered in the police station along with the hammer he had used. He is being interrogated further, the superintendent of police said. He also clarified that this is a property-related murder and not an honour killing.
