Moodbidri, Sep 24: The new dam across Kanchibail river near Moodabidiri was inaugurated here on Sunday, September 23.
The water from the Kanchibail river near Moodbidri or Puttige, was used in irrigation of paddy fields and areca and coconut grooves of Gundyadka, Paladka and Kalasabail villages.
Due to the lack of local leadership, a dam was not built since 15 years and the agricultural farmers were satisfied with one paddy crop alone. Now because of Fr Ivan's initiative and leadership which united all the agriculturists and after holding meetings after meetings, has succeeded to bring the attention of the government.
A new dam was constructed this year and it is ready for irrigation. It is not only the water supply for the agriculture, but the greater effect is the wells and borewells all along the trench, to cover a distance of 10 kms radius will be recharged. This was evident from the previous temporary dam.
Fr Ivan Michael Rodrigues, parish priest of St Ignatius church, Paladka, took initiative to bring the agriculturists together and the Paladka parishioners.
Fr Alfred J Pinto, a native of Paladka and member of the beneficiary family was present.
