Mangaluru, Sep 24: The department of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy of Father Muller Medical College (FMMC) in association with IADVL Karavali organized the ‘Prof J N Shetty Memorial Oration and Karavali Dermatology Society Clinical Meeting’ on September 23 at Decennial Memorial Hall, FMMC.
A total of 100 delegates participated in the scientific event.
The programme is being organized every year in the memory of the restless visionary Professor J N Shetty who was the first dean and head of the Dermatology department of Father Muller Medical College. He is remembered even today for his services in the field of Leprosy in South Kanara district.
The programme commenced with an invocation followed by lamp lighting by the esteemed dignitaries.
Dr Jacintha Martis, professor, department of Dermatology introduced the dignitaries and extended a warm welcome to the gathering.
The inaugural ceremony was presided over by Fr Ajith B Menezes, administrator of Father Muller Medical College. Chief Guest, Dr P Narasimha Rao, president-elect of IADVL National, Dr Jayaprakash Alva, dean, Father Muller Medical College and Dr Smitha Prabhu, president, IADVL Karavali, were also present on the dais.
In his presidential address, Fr Ajith B Menezes spoke on the significance of conducting such orations. “Prof J N Shetty Memorial Oration is a unique feature of Father Muller Medical College. Professor J N Shetty was a legend to us and that is why we commemorate his dedication and commitment towards our institution. We try to instill his qualities in our budding doctors,” he said. He further urged the doctors to emulate his qualities of dedication and commitment to their profession which will be a true tribute and commemoration to Prof J N Shetty.
Prof P Narasimha Rao, the president-elect of IADVL National, was felicitated by the dignitaries present on the occasion. Addressing the gathering, he said, “South Kanara has been known for its magnificence, academic excellence and has always been in the forefront in all aspects of life. It is the ‘Power House of Knowledge’. Students flock to Karavali to upgrade their knowledge and to develop their profession. The Karavali branch of IADVL has been extremely dynamic in organizing frequent dermatology activities.” Further, he highly appreciated the functioning and academic excellence of Father Muller Medical College.
Dr Priyanka John and Dr Romitha Dsouza compered the programme. Dr Jyoti Jayaraman rendered the vote of thanks.
The academic session started off with Prof J N Shetty Memorial Oration by Prof P Narasimha Rao. The Oration topic was ‘Research in Leprosy-Challenges and Opportunities’. Dr Shruthakirthi D Shenoi, professor, KMC Manipal and Dr Pramod Kumar, Professor, KMC Mangalore, chaired the session.
The second talk of the day was delivered by Prof Ganesh S Pai, medical director, Dermacare, Mangaluru on ‘Picosecond QSW laser– Recent advances in clinical application’ which was chaired by Dr Vishal Amin, professor, Yenepoya Medical College.
This was followed by a third scientific session by Dr Jaidev, M D, assistant professor, department of Paediatrics FMMC on ‘Recognition and management of anaphylaxis in children’. Dr Pawan Hegde Professor and HoD, department of Paediatrics, FMMC and Dr Girish B S, professor and HoD, department of Dermatology, KSHEMA chaired the session.
The scientific session also included interesting clinical case presentations by Dermatology residents of FMMC.

This session was chaired by Dr Smitha Prabhu, professor, KMC Manipal and Dr Vinma Shetty, associate professor of Dermatology, A J Hospital, Mangaluru.
Certificates were presented to the postgraduates and mementoes were gifted to the chairpersons of the scientific sessions as a token of appreciation. Dr Ganesh Kamath, Dr Michelle Fernandes and Dr Merryl Rebello of the department of Dermatology FMMC supervised the smooth coordination of this academic meet.
