Mangaluru, Sep 22: People's Association for Geriatric Empowerment (PAGE) observed World Alzheimer’s day here at Town Hall on Saturday, September 22.
PAGE President Dr Olinda Pereira, along with former MLA J R Lobo and other dignitaries, inaugurated World Alzheimer's Day.
Speaking on the occasion, deputy commissioner (DC) Sasikanth Senthil said, "As a community, we should take responsibility in taking care of senior citizens and we should never ignore them. This programme should reflect on getting a solution for Alzheimer’s disease, as solution lies in understanding everything and we should put efforts in understanding the reality,”
Former MLA J R Lobo said, "Youngsters should understand that when they grow old, they may also suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. Youngsters need to respect the elderly and take care of them with love and affection. If we fail to respect the elderly, then society cannot be healthy. Respecting the elderly should begin at our house and then automatically the society will start respecting them,”
District Health Officer Dr M Ramakrishna Rao said, "This programme is very encouraging and motivating. Alzheimer's is not a disease but a social problem. Society needs to support the elderly and encourage those who suffer from Alzheimer’s. Instead of cornering them, we should show love, care and affection towards them, so that they can live a better life,”
Meanwhile Dr M Ramakrishna Rao released PAGE primary health care tool kit book.
PAGE vice-president Dr Prabha Adhikari welcomed the gathering.
