Bengaluru: Two arrested by customs for possessing banned drugs

Bengaluru, Sep 20: Two passengers who allegedly were trying to smuggle out banned drug through Kempegowda International Airport here stand arrested by customs officials. The officials seized 225 bottles of a drug contained banned substance from their possession.

The arrested passengers are Srinivasulu Pojil and Firoze Sheikh from Cuddapah district in Andhra Pradesh, customs officials stated.

They said that the production and sale of cough syrup, 'Phensedyl' which was used in the past to treat allergy-based cough, has been banned since long after finding that it contains intoxicating substance. This medicine was being transported by the accused in their bags. During the scrutiny, they were caught, said customs additional commissioner, M R Reddy.

The value of medicines found happens to be around Rs 25,000. The passengers do not have any records about purchase of this medicine and customs officials are trying to collect information about the source of this medicine, he added.
