Bantwal, Oct 20: A woman from Bollar in Kadeshivalaya village near here, frustrated over unending financial problems and harassment meted out to her by her husband, jumped into a well for committing suicide. Her husband too followed suit to protect her, but died by drowning.
Sundar Shetty, a labourer by profession, was addicted to drinking. He used to torture her physically and mentally. His wife Lalita had to fend for the family through her earnings from bidi rolling besides overseeing the education of her children, studying in high school.
After a quarrel broke out between the couple, the wife threatened to commit suicide and jumped into the well. Shetty asked his son to bring a torch from a neighbouring house and tried to save his wife in the meantime, by lowering himself by holding the rope used for drawing water.
As he was heavily drunk at the time, he died due to drowning, the police said. Both the bodies were brought out by the fire brigade personnel.
Bantwal rural police station-in-charge T D Nagaraj visited the spot. A case has been registered about the unnatural deaths.
