Mangalore, Oct 20: Several parts of the district received light showers on the evening of Sunday October 19, while some regions received heavy rains. The rain has been making its appearance in the district intermittently, since the last about 10 days. Thunder and lightning have been accompanying the rains.
Puttur and Sullia received 6.5 and 8.5 cms of rain during the last 24 hours.Bantwal, Beltangady and also the city were soaked in rain.
Sullia, Bantwal, Putrur, Subrahmanya, Kadaba as well as Beltangady got rains. In Kadaba, standing crops were damaged and elecltric poles were uprooted due to the wind and rain. As trees had fallen across the state highway between Kadaba and subrahmanya, vehicles had to take the Panja route to reach their destinations till Sunday afternoon.
Hundreds of rubber and arecanut trees fell to the ground because of heavy gale. The rain which started at around 3 pm yesterday continued to lash the region non-stop for three hours. Power supply was disrupted at many areas surrounding Kadaba, after a bambo grove leaned on the power lines at Kallakatta near Kadaba.
The rain is putting paid to the dreams of the farmers to reap rich harvests. The harvested paddy gets drenched in the rains at night, while the ripen paddy crops lean onto the ground due to the rain and wind, and paddy corns get soaked in the standing water, affecting the quality of grains.
This also happens to be the harvesting season for arecanut and the water is intefering with the plans of the farmers to dry the arecanut.
