Mangalore, Oct 11: The fourth annual Indo-US Emergency Medicine Summit was inaugurated at Fr Muller Medical College on Thursday October 9. The conference began with an introduction to emergency nursing by nurse Theresa Tavernero, an accomplished businesswoman who also has an MBA after her nursing degree.

The keynote address was by Prema D’Souza, vice-principal, College of Nursing on ‘Rescue, resuscitation, and research’. The message from the guest faculty was given by Dr Tracy Sanson, chairperson of the Indo-US Summit and Associate Professor, University of South Florida. 

Dr Sanson said that emergency health care is a collaborated effort of the medical team. She said that it was not enough to be slow and steady, but that one had to be fast and consistent. She stressed the importance of health personnel being quick and well-equipped to save lives.

The gathering was welcomed by Dr Sanjeev Rai, dean, FMMC. The guest faculty was introduced by Dr Sudeer Hegde, head of anaesthesiology department, FMMC, and a lamp was lit to inaugurate the meeting.

Dr Sanson, talked about leadership with respect to emergency nursing, while nurse Tavernero spoke about teamwork and Dr Carey Pelto, an expert on tactical emergency medicine, spoke on his specialization. Fr Patrick Rodrigues honoured the guest faculty and gave the presidential address.

The lectures by the guest speakers were followed by case management presentations by nursing students. A total of 11 presentations were made, the results of which will be announced on the last day of the conference. The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr Preethi Jain, associate professor of anesthesiology, FMMC.
