Mangalore, Oct 7: Pompeii Day was celebrated in Pompeii College, Aikala near Kinnigoly, to honour the patron of the college Pompeii Mother. Correspondent of the College Fr Paul Pinto presided over the function. Fr Valerian Mendonca, former principal of the college and director of Sandesha, and Fr Cyril from S V D House were the chief guests. Prof Patrick Menezes, principal of the college, Harishchandra Shetty of the Parents-Teachers Association and Rocky Lobo, president of the Old Students Association were present at the dais.
In his inaugural address, Fr Valerian Mendonca referred to the recent developments in the city and elsewhere that have shocked the citizens, and said, he was sad to see that highly qualified persons and students are involved with terrorism and other illegal activities. He advised the students to spread the message of peace and harmony amongst the society through their selfless services and kind deeds.
lass-wise cultural competitions were held on the occasion. Students enthusiastically took part in the activities and exhibited their talents in abundance. Most of the performances depicted Indian culture with specific thrust on the local traditions. Prizes and trophies were distributed to the winners.
Gunakar, secretary of the Teachers' Association, welcomed the gathering. Pradeep proposed vote of thanks. Sr Flavina compered the programme.
