Milk, Mercedes can't be taxed at same rate, says Modi on one GST rate

New Delhi, Jul 2 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday ruled out single GST rate, saying milk and a Mercedes can't be taxed at the same rate while claiming that the new tax regime has showcased Indian cooperative federalism at its best.

"It would have been very simple to have just one slab but it would have meant we could not have food items at zero per cent tax rate. Can we have milk and Mercedes at the same rate?" Modi told Swarajya news magazine in a interview.

Taking a dig at the Congress for its demand of having a single GST rate, he said: "They are effectively saying they will tax food items and commodities, which are currently at zero or 5 per cent, at 18 per cent."

Counting the benefits of GST, Modi said the number of enterprises registered from Independence until now was 66 lakh while in just one year after the introduction of GST, the number of new enterprises registered is 48 lakh.

"Around 350 crore invoices were processed and 11 crore returns were filed. Would we be looking at such numbers, if GST were indeed very complex?" asked the Prime Minister.

He said that the check-posts across the country have been abolished and there are no more queues at state borders.

"Not only are truck drivers saving precious time but also the logistics sector is getting a boost and thereby increasing the productivity of our country. Would this be happening if GST was complex?" he said.

Dubbing GST as a "massive change", Modi said the new tax regime has seen Indian cooperative federalism at its best.

"We consolidated the states and developed proactively a consensus, where earlier governments had failed," he said, adding the reform required a complete reset of one of the world's largest economic systems, merging 17 taxes and 23 cesses into one single tax.

"There are often teething troubles seen when a reform of this magnitude is carried out, but these issues were not only identified but also addressed in real time," he said.

The Prime Minister said that his overnment has reduced taxes on nearly 400 groups of items.

"Around 150 groups of items have zero per cent tax rate. If you look at the rates, for most of the day-to-day commodities, the rate has actually come down. Be it rice, wheat, sugar, spices, etc, total tax levied has been reduced in most cases. Large number of items of daily usage are either exempted or in 5 per cent slab. Some 95 per
cent items fall in/below the 18 per cent slab," he said.

Responding to a query that whether the GST was any way linked to his government's economic philosophy of minimum government, Modi said: "GST has been designed to eliminate Inspector Raj with the help of information technology. From returns to refund, everything happens online."

Are, unpad PM of the great country, Millllk nd Mercedes can be taxed at same rate, why not?? Do you know maths, how possible when you faked your degree while you were meditating in Himalayas. No one came to Himalayas to teach you maths. If you tax 1% for milk of Rs.100 then the tax will be 1 rupee and if you tax 1% for a Mercedes that costs Rs. 10000000, then the tax will be Rs.100000. If there are any bhakths who have some grey matter inside their skull, please tell your God that is as simple as making a chai or pakora.

This guy will take another 10 years to understand the logic as he took 10 years to understand GST. He OPPOSED GST, during his term as CM of Gujarat. Now he is trying to implement it and made a mess of it. It works like this. Its the percentage and not fixed. Milk costs Rs.50 per litre and consumer pays Rs. 6 as GST @12%. Mercedes costing Rs.50lakhs pays Rs.6lakhs as GST. His bakhts will not understand, but are fooled by his oratory. Where is 15lakhs promised by him? The Swiss Bank ac balances are swelled by 50% during the last year.

Sure, Milk and Mercedes can't be taxed equally.
But, the catch is, Milk GST 0%
Fuel required for transporting Milk has been taxed beyond the maximum slab of GST 28%. Actually Fuel is taxed @ 90% altogether.

Yes, milk and Mercedes can not come under one slab, common citizen knows about it. BUT WHY 90% CENTRAL AND STATE TAX IS CLAMPED ON PETROLEUM PRODUCTS (PETROL & DIESEL), WHY CAN'T GST OF 12 TO 18% BE CHARGED .

PETROL & DIESEL IS MORE USED THAN MILK IN INDIA, Is Mr. MODI NOT AWARE OF IT.

Dear Modiji , Agreed that milk and Mercedes cannot have the same tax, but surely Petrol/Diesel and milk should have the same tax. Please remember that the poorest of the poor use public transport. The milk vendors use transport to deliver milk. The farmers use transport to deliver their produce. The common man uses public transport. The students use public transport. Therefore why are you sucking the blood of the poor with high taxes on petrol and diesel?

    Dear Karthik Karkera, Maryhill Mangalore,

G.S.T., was exhorbitant to all most all the commodities.

THE CHAAIWAALA HASTILY IMPLEMENTED G.ST. WITHOUT THINKING.

WHY THEY HAVE INCREASED G.S.T. EXHORBITANTLY AT THE VERY FIRST???!!!

AND EXACTLY CONGRESS PROTESTED AND HE HAS WITHDRAWN HIGH G.S.T. TO FEW COMMODITIES.

WHY THEN THERE IS NO G.S.T. TO ALCOHOL, DIESEL AND PETROL.

YOU MUST AGREE IT IS THE ILLITERACY AND NAIVENESS OF THE CHAAIWAALA P.M., OF INDIA.

NOW DON'T SAY HE HAS PASSED M.A., IN SOCIOLOGY.

MANY PEOPLE HAVE OBTAINED POST GRADUATES DUPLICATE CERTIFICATES.

WE THE CONGRESS ARE NOT CARED TO BJP, THE BESHARAM, BALATHKARI, BEHUDHA, JUMLA, JUGGLER, JOKING, JAANUVAAR, PORN, PREMATURE PRODUCT,

Yes, it will take 10 years for this Chaiwala to understand, as he took 10 years to understand GST By that time it will be too late for him. He is making a mess of implementing GST. Congress will implement 1 rate of GST as propogated.

Oh Yes absolutely Karthik!! Who cares for their protest?? After all who cares for the sufferings of common man?? Who cares for the rise in fuel prices? In Karnataka, BJP want to go on Padayatre against the state government. There were no padayatre when the petrol prices, LPG prices keep on raising. BTW, you care when you're sitting in opposition bench, don't you. The same GST that your God Feku Maharaj taking credit for, was opposed when the same Chaiwala was sitting in Gujarath, The same Aadhar card was opposed when Jootley was sitting as the leader of opposition and now no problems with Aadhar whatsoever. Do you remember the opposition on the Nuclear treaty? You know what, there are bhakths and there are blind bhakths and then there are blind bhakths with no grey matter inside their skull. Ignorance was never a rare commodity to bhakths and their master. Do you remember Sant Kabir and Gorakhnath were having chai and pakora together, Takshashila is in Bihar, Porus was defeated on the banks of Ganga and Alexander was defeated by Biharis, Mahatma Gandhi's first name is Mohanlal (thank God he did not say "Mamootti"), 56" chest is endorsed by 600 crore Indians, Konark Sun temple is 2,000 years old, Gen. Cariappa and Gen. Thimmayya were humiliated by Nehru. When master's knowledge is laughable, why blame the chelas? Get some break from DW and help out your master with general knowledge particularly history and economics. We will not miss you at all!!!
