New Delhi, Jun 19 (India Today): In a fortnight, the petrol prices have dipped by Rs 2.16 per litre. On Tuesday, petrol prices came down by 8 paise a litre. Diesel, on the other hand, remained unchanged for seventh day in a row.
In the national capital, petrol is selling at Rs 76.27 per litre. For other metro cities, petrol prices per litre fell to Rs 78.94 in Kolkata, Rs 84.06 in Mumbai and Rs 79.16 in Chennai.
After hitting an all-time high of Rs 78.43 a litre for petrol and Rs 69.31 for diesel on May 29, the government has been under immense pressure to reduce excise duties (taxes) on fuel.
Currently, petrol and diesel are liable to a duty of Rs 19.48 and 15.33 a litre respectively. On Monday, however, Finance minister Arun Jaitley ruled out the possibility of tax concession on petrol and diesel.
Meanwhile, truck owners and operators went on a nationwide strike on Monday against increasing diesel prices.
Unaltered diesel prices per litre on Tuesday are Rs 67.78 in Delhi, Rs 70.33 in Kolkata, Rs 72.13 in Mumbai, Rs 71.54 in Chennai.
Since January 1, 2018, petrol prices have risen by Rs 6.46 a litre and diesel by Rs 8.21. The fuel price rise has triggered inflation, which has doubled in a year to 4.43 percent in May 2018.
The Brent crude oil prices went up on Monday by $1 to $ 74.50 a barrel despite suggestions that OPEC (Organisation for Petroleum Exporting countries).
