Mangaluru: Heavy rain, lightning in district - two cows charred alive

Mangaluru, May 26: Various parts of the district including the city, Puttur and Sullia taluks received heavy rain coupled with thunder and lightning in the wee hours of Friday May 25.

As compared to Puttur and Sullia, rainfall in some parts of Sullia taluk, Uppinangady etc were reported to be of less intensity. The city got rainfall since 11 pm on Thursday, which resulted in power outage for some time.

Two cows were charred alive after lightning struck the cattle shed where they were housed in the early morning of Friday May 25. The incident happened at Bellur Kemraje village in Sullia taluk.

Like other parts of the taluk, strong wind, heavy rain and lightning continued from 3 am to 5. 30 am on Friday at Bellur Kemraje. After lightning struck a coconut tree standing near the house of Aithappa Gowda in Kemraje village, a pump shed and cattle shed nearby also caught fire and burnt down. Gowda's house too suffered damages.

Neighbours joined together in dousing fire by pouring water. Later, fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot and extinguished the flames. The loss suffered in this incident runs into lacs of rupees, it is said. Gram panchayat and revenue department officials visited the spot and undertook scrutiny.
