Kasargod, May 22: Deputy Commissioner Jeevan Babu K has asked police officials to take stern action against those who spread false rumors about Nipah virus.

He said that people need not be worried about rumors. “The news that a patient of Nipah from Kasargod has died in a hospital in Mangaluru is unfounded. The false news is spread on social networks. Therefore, strict action should be taken against the suspects.

“The department of health in Kerala has listed precautions needed to prevent the virus. The virus does not spread through pet animals. Fruits bitten by bats should not be fed to pet animals. If animals have breathing problems they should be taken to a veterinary hospital,” said director of veterinary hospital. “Special committees are formed in the state and district level to prevent spread of virus. A helpline that will be active for 24 hours will also be opened.”

“There are no reports of the spread of the virus through animals. It spreads through bats. Eating fruits bitten by them or coming in contact with their excreta is dangerous. We should take precautions about it,” stated the veterinary department.

“The department has seriously considered the spread of the virus. A high level delegation from the center will visit the places where the virus was found.

"The department of health has said that ten people have died of the virus in Koyikkode and Malappuram, Kerala. The virus was found among a few others who are being treated,” stated the department.
