Puttur, May 23: A driver from here died of cardiac arrest after being overwhelmed at the prospects of the Maruti van which he was driving jumping into a deep roadside gorge, after noticing that the steering of the vehicle had got jammed. The incident happened near BTCJ educational instutitons near Somwarpet, Kodagu district, on the morning of Tuesday May 22.
The deceased was Tej (35) from here, who has been functioning as a mechanic at Gopalpura near Shanivarsanthe.
Tej from here had worked for about ten years as mechanic in a shop at Gudugalale near Shanivarsanthe. Recently he had opened his own garage at Gopalpura. He had married 18 months back, but was living alone in a rented accommodation at Gopalpura. His wife was living in his house in the town here.
Three days back, Tej had come to the town to visit his wife and seven-month-old child. He was returning to Gopalpura in a Maruti van on Tuesday morning. His van was later found to have come to a stop at the edge of a gorge near Somwarpet. The steering of the vehicle was found to have been locked, and the body of Tej was found to have fallen on the steering wheel.
Some people travelling by vehicles saw the stranded vehicle with motionless driver and took Tej to government hospital at Somwarpet but the doctors declared him brought dead. After postmortem, his body was handed over to relatives.
