Kundapur, May 18: The Congress condemned attacks on its party workers by BJP supporters after the election results were announced, stating that the perpetrators of the violence should be taken to task immediately or a protest will be held.
Speaking at a press conference held on Thursday, May 17 at Congress office here, Rakesh Malli, state president, INTUC, said, "The house of a party worker was attacked when BJP supporters went beyond the limit celebrating their victory in Shankarnarayana which comes under the limits of Kota police station. We have filed a complaint and are awaiting action. An appeal has also been made to the SP.”
"BJP supporters caused great inconvenience to the women in the house and a five-month-old baby when they made noise bursting crackers and riding Bullet motorcycles in front of the house. After every election, BJP supporters attack Congress party workers. It is not right to attack women. Strict action should be taken against them," said Vijay Poojary, who was subjected to attack.
Kundapur Block Congress president, Shivaram Shetty who was present at the conference said, "The course of action to be taken shall be decided by the party leaders. However, we are not willing to compromise. Those who attacked our party workers will be subject to legal action."
Hinting at a possible reason as to why Congress performed dismally in the election in the district, Rakesh Malli said, "Although Siddaramaiah government brought about development, the BJP misrepresented facts and that contributed to our defeat. Even in Kundapur, they were inciting people against me by saying that I was an outsider. However, we are not afraid of any attack carried out on our party workers. The party is well organised for the upcoming local-body elections."
Lakshmi Poojarthi, who was subject to the attacks, Congress Backward Classes Commission vice-president, Mani Gopal, Women's unit president, Jyothi Puthran, State IT Cell vice-president Chandrashekar Shetty, Vinod Crasta and Town Congress president Ganesh Sherigar were present at the press conference.
