Belagavi: Nitin Gadkari raises ‘Jai Maharashtra’ slogan leaving Kannadigas red-faced

Daijiworld Media Network – Belagavi (DC)

Belagavi, May 4: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, who is in poll-bound Karnataka for campaigning, left Kannadigas red faced after he raised slogans in favour of Marathi speaking community with an intention to capture votes here on Thursday on May 4.

The incident occurred at Bedakihala village in Chikkodi when Gadkari was campaigning for the BJP candidates in Chikkodi-Sadalaga constituency. He sparked a row by allegedly insulting the Kannadigas by raising slogans in support of Marathis.

Addressing the crowd he chanted 'Jai Maharashtra' slogan eyeing Marathi vote bank. Immediately after few local BJP leaders gave suggestion in writing he shifted his focus targeting the Congress for its failure on all fronts. He also said that BJP had never played politics when it comes to development.

Chikkodi-Sadalga constituency in the Belagavi district and Mumbai Karnataka region of Karnataka is a part of the Chikkodi Parliamentary Lok Sabha constituency.

While Congress has named Ganesh Hukkeri as its candidate, BJP has presented Anna Saheb Jolle as its candidate in the Chikkodi constituency.

This is the reality of BJP. They can not find anything to speak wisely, so they speak without even thinking. This is the ultimate call that BJP is leaving Karnataka as they can not influence the mind of the people in Karnataka. Its a good sign that they are not able to win the hearts of people of Karnataka.

The context in which Mr. Gadkari uttered the word “Jai Maharashtra” may be totally irrelevant.

But why would anyone imply that the word “Jai Maharashtra” is a word insulting to Kannadigas? What is the logic behind that? Do people in Karnataka have problem with Maharashtra being part of the Indian union?

Don't worry historically Karnataka police from Constable level right to the top are all hardcore Kannadigas and staunch supporters of Belagavi being part and parcel of Karnataka. Every time there have been or are protests from Marathi groups many of them have felt the hard end of the police lathis. Most original residents of Belagavi are bilingual irrespective of whether they are of Kannada or Marathi origin. However, in most police stations police only speak Kannada not Marathi.

I am very well aware of Maharashtra making a claim over Belagavi as part of their state. So what? Has anything tangible happened in the last 63 years?

India’s first major state reorganisations occurred in 1956 when 16 states were formed. Thereafter, many states have been bifurcated and many UT’s have been given a statehood. But no part of one state has been handed over to another state just because another state has made a claim. Any alternation to the boundary of a state would require a constitutional amendment and also approval of the bill in Maharashtra and Karnataka state assembly.

What are the odds of Karnataka State assembly passing a resolution handing over Belagam district to Maharashtra?

Moreover, whenever the issue of Belgam or Cauvery river comes up, why does everyone react as if Karnataka is a sovereign entity distinct from Union of India? Countries like Sril Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh have socio-cultural similarities to the Indian states they are bordering with. Still the economic prowess of these countries are pretty low compared to India.

    @ Rampanna,

I agree with you when you say "Union of India". But there is a demand to divide Maharashtra in two states, namely Vidarbha and Maharashtra. Will you support this? Why BJP govt is not dividing the state so that more development can take place in Vidarbha region.

There is also a demand to divide Gujarat into Gujarat and Saurashtra. Why is BJP govt not agreeing to this?

You are fine with taking away Belagavi from Karnataka but you don't want to divide states into Vidarbha and Saurashtra for better development. Right?

That's called Hypocrisy at its best which is always shown on andh bhakts.... Good Luck.

    Sorry Mr. Geoffrey,

Mr. Gadkari uttering “Jai Maharashtra” does not mean anything to me, and I am neither gratified nor insulted by his comments.

My bigger worry is that the corruption tainted Yeddy being projected as the CM candidate as if BJP is so short of talent that it could not muster one candidate with a clean image; and more over the support of Reddy brothers is being openly taken just to win seats in the Bellary region. When the BJP has already sold its integrity to the Reddy brothers, what exactly can we expect should the party come to power on May 12?
(And all those BJP supporters who will defend the party claiming that the Reddy brothers have all been cleared by the CBI should go and watch “Truth vs Hype” by Srinivasan Jain in NDTV and listen to Justice Santosh Hegde’s statement. Your heads will hang in shame (if you have any head)).

If the Reddys win Bellary seat and the Yeddy become CM this time, I will symbolically bury a copy of the Indian constitution as it would very well be the death of Indian constitution in the modern era.

Jai Hind, Jai Maharashtra, Jai Karnataka.

You can write so much and criticize everyone except that you don't have the guts to criticize PM Modi for supporting the corruption tainted Yeddy and Reddy on one hand and calling himself and anti corruption crusader on the other hand. This is due to an atmosphere of fear and intimidation Modi Sarkar has brought to this country ? Criticism must be direct. Name him. 'Dignity of office' cannot be used as an excuse or a shield to cover up wrongs. Call a spade a spade if one wants to claim a high moral ground or put on the clothing of political neutrality.
