Mangaluru, Apr 24: Multilingual actor, Prakash Rai, said that it was improper on the part of certain politicians to come out with a statement on the desirability of bringing ammendments to the constitution, which upholds lofty ideals like stopping atrocities on poor people, working against misuse of power and oppression.
He addressed a 'Democratic Protection Day' programme organized under the aegis of Dakshina Kannada district unit of Dalit Sangharsh Samiti as part of the celebration of Baba Saheb Ambedkar's birth anniversary at town hall here on Monday April 23.
The actor said that the constitution created by Dr Ambedkar is committed to the ideals of people belonging to all religions, speaking different languages and pursuing different ideals to coexist harmoniously. "BJP's line of action is exactly opposite to these ideals. No government should advocate on behalf of a particular religion. It is the duty of the elected government to work for the welfare of people from all religions. People who want to work for religion should live in shrines and maths," he felt.
Rai said that the twin-districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada were known for intelligence and business acumen in the past. Regretting the fact that these districts have now earned communal tag, he urged the people to think of getting rid of this tag.
Dalit Sangharsh Samiti's Dakshina Kannada district president, Raghu K Yekkar, presided over the progrmme. State organizing convener, M Devadas, journalist, Mehabub Pasha Malnad, president of the Federation of Indian Rationalist Associations, Prof Narendra Nayak, lecturer, Jyoti Chelair, women's wing convener of Dalit Sangharsh Samiti, Sarojini and others were present.
