Bantwal, Apr 23: A newly-married lady killed herself by consuming excessive dose of medicines at Kandoor in Sajipamooda village near here on Saturday April 21. She reportedly was facing harassment at the hands of her husband and mother-in-law.
The victim was Suprabha (25), wife of Balakrishna Maiya from Kandoor.
Balakrishna Maiya had married Suprabha, daughter of Surendra from Uppinangady Ramanagar, a few months back. Thereafter, Suprabha had told her parents about the harassment she faced from her husband and his mother, who tortured her in pursuance of their demand for bringing in more dowry.
In a complaint filed at the police station, father of the lady claimed that Suprabha had called him on Friday night to confess that she had consumed excessive dose of tablets and that her husband and mother-in-law were responsible for the decision taken by her to end her life.
After Suprabha suffered from serious health complications, her family members admitted her into a private hospital at Thumbe but she did not respond to treatment, family sources stated.
On the basis of a complaint made by Surendra at the town police station here on dowry death, the police have arrested both Balakrishna Maiya and his mother, Shashikala. On being produced at the court, they were remanded to judicial custody, police personnel said.
