Kundapur, Apr 23: A boy who had entered sea for fun was washed away on the evening of Saturday April 22 at the picturesque Maravanthe beach in the taluk.

The deceased has been identified as Muhammed Junaid (12), son of Muhammed Rasheed from Boliyar near Mangaluru. He was a member of a group of people from Manjanady, Uppinangadi, who had attended a marriage function at Shirur here on Sunday. The entourage was returning to Manjanady by bus when its occupants showed interest in playing in the sea. The bus was stopped opposite Lord Varahaswamy temple at Maravanthe and some of the people went to the beach at about 5.30 pm for fun.

On this occasion, Junaid, who had ventured into the sea, was gripped by the sea waves and sucked into the sea. Two others, Unais (14), son of Muhammed Rasheed, and Iyaz (14), son of Ibrahim, suffered grave injuries but were lucky to survive the ordeal. Both are being treated in a hospital in the town. All others luckily escaped without any danger.
Personnel of Coastal Security Force at Gangolli, police personnel of Gangolli station, and fire brigade personnel have launched a search operation for the boy.

On Sunday, Arabian Sea was very choppy. Locals said that the people should have taken cognizance of the sea's fierceness and kept away from entering it. Gangolli police, who have registered a case, are investigating.
