Mangaluru, Apr 22: At a time when political battles are turning nastier by the day in the run-up to the Karnataka elections, heartwarming scenes were witnessed at the premises of Shree Suryanarayana Temple in Maroli here, when political rivals met face to face.
One would expect political rivals to have a go at each other whenever they are presented with the opportunity. But two gentlemen politicians in Mangaluru South on Sunday April 22 proved that there are more important things in life that go way beyond any kind of politics.
On Sunday afternoon, Congress candidate J R Lobo was about to leave the temple after his visit when BJP candidate and opponent Vedavyas Kamath arrived at the temple. On seeing Lobo, Kamath got out of the car and went straight to him, extending a handshake.
Lobo on his part responded warmly and the two engaged in friendly but witty banter, much to the amusement of their respective supporters and the mediapersons who had gathered.
Lobo told Kamath, "Just as Arjun sought Sri Krishna's blessings, I got in first to seek blessings. Now you will have to sit and wait near Sri Krishna's head (like Duryodhan)."
In response, Kamath replied, "Sri Krishna knows whom to grant his blessings on. Even though we have different party ideologies, let us contest the elections as Mangalureans and for Mangalureans."
The two cracked jokes on their appearances, laughed heartily and embraced while wishing each other good luck for the elections.
Both the candidates will be filing their nominations on Monday April 23.
