Puttur, Apr 22: Dakshina Kannada district urban crime intelligence bureau has arrested a gang involved in cheating gullible people by selling them sea shells containing fake pearls and making them believe them to be original ones. A case has been registered against the gang members. One of the arrested accused in this case happens to be working as driver of the jeep belonging to the assistant commissioner of police at Mangaluru.
The police team has arrested Mohammed Mansoor (27), Badagulipady Ibrahim (35), George G K (35) from Nelyady Dontila, Dinesh (29), resident of Kalavaru Kuppepadavu, Mohammed Muqtar (19) from Pavoor villalge, Mohammed Naushad (29) from Kalavaru village and Ismail (40) from Nelyady.

Ismail from Nelyady, one of the arrested accused, is a volunteer of the district home guards. In the past, he had served in Uppinangady police station as a home guard. As there were allegations of making use of the police cap to extort money from vehicle drivers, misusing names of police officers for personal gains etc against him, as per the recommendations of Upinangady police sub-inspector, Nandakumar, he was discharged from service.
Thereafter, Ismail had joined the fire brigade at Beltangady by posing to serve as home guard volunteer. By using influence of someone, he had bagged work as driver of an assistant commissioner of police at Mangaluru thereafter. Many feel that he would have joined as driver for police department with the aim of collecting information from the department and extending help to criminals.
