Udupi: Traditional ‘Horekanike’ performed ahead of Brahmakalashotsava

Udupi, Apr 18: A traditional ‘Horekanike‘ procession was held, accompanied by a grand Shobhayatra as part of Brahmakalashotsava of renovated Sri Veerabhadra Swamy Temple, here on April 16.

Devotees donated food grains, pulses, coconuts, vegetables, banana, and tomatoes prior to the procession.

The procession began from Athrady, Puttige, Guddeangadi. In all, 16 wards of Udupi were part of the procession, accompanied by grand traditional band sets, attractive tableau, Kumba Kalasha and Kahale.



The procession also comprised of peacock dance and tiger dance team. They were the main attraction of the Shobhayatra. Hundreds of devotees took part in the Shobhayatra.

Horekanike was carried out in decorated vehicles and some devotees carried out vegetables in baskets.

Devotees from seven villages of Hiriyadka have grown vegetables from the last three months at their backyard for this occasion.

The temple will celebrate a 10-day long festival. On all these days, devotees will be served food. The devotees will be provided breakfast, snacks, lunch, evening snacks and dinner.

Subhaschandra Hegde, president of the committee, Govardhandas Hegde, working president, Parika Aramane Somanath Shetty, secretary, Runachal Hegde, Mumbai committee, working president, Natraj Hegde, organising secretary and others were present in the procession.
