Bhatkal, Apr 12: Raghavendra Ilagera from Hamsabhavi village in Hirekerur, Haveri district, has been sitting in dharna near the office of the girl with whom he had been engaged to be married. He is in a fix as the girl is not willing to marry him, but her family members are not allowing him to marry any other girl.
Raghavendra had lived in the house of his maternal uncle in Yaklaspur, Ranebennur taluk for four years since 2012. His uncle, who does not have male offspring, had decided to give his daughter in marriage to Raghavendra. Raghavendra used to work as daily wager. He was initially not prepared for the alliance, but under pressure from his maternal uncle, he gave his approval. But his parents were not agreeable for this marriage.
In the absence of his parents, engagement ceremony of Raghavendra was performed on June 16, 2017 at Ranebennur.
The girl has completed graduation and bagged a job in a private firm. After getting job, she refused to marry Raghavendra. Thereafter, under instructions from his parents, Raghavendra participated in an engagement ceremony with another girl. After coming to know about it, family of his maternal uncle told him not to marry anyone else than their own daughter. He was threatened of dire consequences if he married any girl other than the daughter of his uncle. It is said that the family also went to the house of the other girl with whom Raghavendra is to marry, and urged the family not conduct the marriage.
Hamsabhavi police sub-inspector has been informed of this problem. Raghavendra says that the family of the girl is not inclined to discuss the matter to sort out the problem. He says that he has not declined marriage. The girl with whom the engagement ceremony was conducted says that Raghavendra cannot marry another girl without her permission.
