On Monday, when the bride was going round the sacrificial fire for 'Saptapadi' that would have solemnized the marriage, the bride's lover, Nandan, suddenly swung a hatchet at the neck of the bride. The bride's maternal uncle who was near her instantly tried to shield her. Both the bride, Geeta (23), and her maternal uncle, Gangadhara Swamy, suffered serious injuries and are admitted into a hospital in the city.
Geeta was working as a cashier in a hotel in the city, and Nandan worked as a broker near RTO office here. He had developed friendship with Geeta and it is said that both had begun to love each other. Geeta had brought to Nandan's notice that her family had fixed her marriage with Bharat from Bheemanakone in Sagar taluk. It is learnt that although the lovers tried to elope and marry, their plan did not succeed.
The police say that Geeta had promised that she would come out from the marriage hall and join Nandan after the reception. Nandan who participated in the function, waited for Geeta the whole night and got angry as she did not meet him. Nandan took part in the marriage function the next day, and captured video of the function. But as soon as the customary Taali was placed around Geeta's neck and the bride and groom started going around the holy fire, he attacked the bride with a hatchet. Geeta collapsed to the ground, and he attacked Gangadhara Swamy when he tried to protect Geeta. Both were provided first aid in the sub-divisional hospital at Sagar before being shifted to a private hospital in the city.
Nandan (23), resident of Hosamane Extension here, was overpowered by the people and handed over to the police.
