Udupi, Apr 3: The district police observed state Police Flag Day amidst a colorful parade at Chandu Maidan here on Monday, April 2.
Retired sub-inspector Rajgopal was the chief guest and received the guard of honour at the parade. He ceremoniously released the police flag on the occasion.
Rajgopal addressing the gathering said, “There are two important days we observe. One is Flag Day and another is Martyrs’ Day. We discharge our duties with sincerity and honesty. Police personnel are accountable for protection of property, wealth and life of people and maintaining peace in society. I have served for 35 years in the police department at various police stations. Cooperation of staff is also very important for smooth functioning. As police receive benefits from the government, in return, each one should provide selfless service. Police job is unlike other jobs. Police should do the work of wiping the tears of needy (complainant). One should respect and address the problems of people. Only then God will bless and he police will get recognition in the society. The police department must be people friendly machinery. Any officer can address the problems of complainants in the absence of sub-inspector or head of the police station. Only then people will build confidence on the police department. It will create good opinion about the department.”
SP Laxman Nimbargi said, “Flag Day is celebrated not only for building a good bond with the society, but for also continuing a bond with retired police officers. They are the guiding spirit for the future generations. The day is organised to respect retired police personnel. A total amount of Rs 13,12,481 has been saved in the permanent deposit account. Over Rs 3,84,150 was distributed last year to retired police. The welfare fund amount was collected by selling police flags from the district police units and stations. As many as 67 retired police officers were given a total aid of Rs 5,05,734 for their medical expenses. Around 21% of the welfare fund is given for medical expenses of retired police.”
