Mangaluru: Parts of district get good rainfall on Sunday evening

Mangaluru, Apr 2: Good rain coupled with thunder and lightning lashed Subrahmanya in Sullia taluk and some other places in Dakshina Kannada district on the evening of Sunday April 1. As a result, many parts of the district went without power supply for a few hours since Sunday evening.

A number of places in the district experienced cloudy weather since Sunday morning. In the evening, rain appeared along with lightning and thunder. Places like Kalanja, Kalmadka and Markanja got good rainfall. Sullia town and surrounding areas experienced drizzle. Power supply disruption began by 4 pm. Some parts of Mangaluru, Beltangady, Putur and Bantwal taluk reported light drizzle. The city which experienced cloudy sky during a part of the day and went without any rain, registered maximum temperature of 34 degree Celsius and minimum of 29 degree Celsius on Sunday.

The rain provided relief from scorching heat. At the same time, programmes like Yakshagana performances, Bhoota Kola, religious ceremonies, marriage etc faced problems because of unexpected rainfall.

A number of farmers said that areca nut laid out to dry in the sun got wet because of sudden rain which was auite unexpected. Wet areca nut is hard to preserve for long, they rue.
