Mangalore, Aug 26: Jimmy alias Samir (26), a rickshaw driver from Uppala Hidayatnagar was murdered by the close relatives of his friend, newly-married Munir living in his neighbourhood, on the night of Sunday August 24.

Samir

Munir was in love with a girl from his neighbouring house. His family strongly opposed the relationship and after failing to convince Munir to end his relationship with the girl, the family had driven him out of their home. He used to live in  a hired house ever since.

On Sunday, Munir married his lover at a ceremony secretly arranged in the house of one of her relatives located in Kunjathur. This had incensed Munir's family. After the marriage function, Munir was going to the home of Samir from Bekur in a rickshaw driven by his another friend Jimmy alias Samir, when a gang of three intercepted the rikshaw at Posotu near Hosangady. It is said, that the gang, armed with lethal weapons, attacked the occupants of the rickshaw mercilessly.

The gang comprised of Munir's brother Rashid (25) residing at Manimunda, a relative named Siddiq (28) and Siddiq's father Mohammed Kunhi (65). The gang dragged Munir out of the rickshaw and launched an attack on him. When rickshaw driver Samir tried to shield Munir, he too was hit with sharp weapons. Munir and the other person named Samir from Bekur, suffered deep wounds inflicted by the weapons. The locals, who rushed to the spot on hearing the wails of the wounded, shifted them to a hospital in Mangalore. Samir however, breathed his last before he could be admitted into the hospital.

The incident occured at about 9.30 pm on Sunday. Although the Manjeshwar police immediately reached the spot, the culprits succeeded in decamping. It is stated, that a few tried to paint this as a clash on ancestoral property. The police raided the houses of the accused, but could not find them there. Both Munir (28) and Samir from Bekur (26) are recovering at a private hospital in Mangalore.

Investigations in the case are led by Kumble circle inspector of police Damodaran
