Udupi, Mar 26: Commemorating ‘Mahad Agitation’, a rally and public meeting was organized by Karnataka Dalita Sangarsha Samiti (KDSS), Dalit and minority organisations on March 24.
“On March 20, 1927 Dr B R Ambedkar with 3,000 other Dalits touched and drank the water from Chowdarakere in Mahad. The Dalits of the village were not allowed to use the lake,” said Uday Kumar Tallur, state convener.
“Dalits are facing many problems even now. Our MP Shobha Karandlanje is speaking in favor of RSS. Rather than fighting on unnecessary issues, she should show some concern towards the Dalits of the state. As an MP she can introduce many development measures for the betterment of Dalits,” he said.
He also asked BJP to give one general category constituency for Dalits. “There are many reserved constituencies for Dalits. But other than those, general category constituencies are not given for Dalits. We urge BJP to give one constituency to Dalits”, he said.
G Rajshekar, thinker, speaking on the occasion said, “Dr Ambedkar drafted the Constitution of our country. After BJP came to power, democracy is in danger. The fate of Dalits is same as olden days. Ambedkar himself went through the troubles of Dalits. Questions are being raised to damage the self-esteem of Dalits. Under this government, no one is secure. Amit Shah himself has given order to encounter some people in Gujarat,” he said.
Sunder Mastar, Prof Phaniraj, S S Prasad, Shyam Sunder Thekkatte and others took part in the rally.
