Mangalore, Aug 23: Some unidentified miscreants attacked a Catholic prayer centre near Ashraya Colony at Pacchanady here and damaged a grotto erected there on Friday August 22 night.

Sources informed that the grotto which was built here also has bee damaged by the miscreants. ‘Bhagavadhwaja’ has been placed here in many places after damaging the grotto. The prayer centre is located on a hillock between Bondel and Vamanjur. The Catholics of surrounding areas were conducting prayers here for many decades.

Devotees with religious leaders gathered on the spot on Saturday August 23, after receiving the information about the desecration of religious centre. Circle inspector Jayanth Shetty, Kankanady rural station sub-inspector visited the spot and assured them of taking stringent action against the miscreants.

So far neither any organization has owned responsibility for the act, nor have the police been identify the miscreants. Howerver, the devotees from the surrounding area have condemned this cowardly act and have demanded the administration to initiate stringent action against those responsible for this heinous act.

It is high time all the minorities fight for their rights. Some people should be reminded that India is a secular state and no community/religion has an upper hand over any other. it is very clear that the higher authorities are involoved and they are the ones to be penalised first. the people who have done this in the name of religion should be taught the basic values of their religion first, that of peace, brotherhood and love among all human beings.

Either way, where is the rule of law. Issues that really should worry us is poverty, hunger & shelter. None come on the streets for such issues. Issues of least priority like religion has gained prominence and has devided the Indian Polity right down the middle.

Politicians have been thriving on this divide and will continue to thrive and build their fortunes. Religion should be confined to the four walls of our homes and not on roads, footpaths, corner streets. We 'bloody fool' Indians, it all began in all its viciousness with Babri Masjid, it has happened in Madhya Pradesh, it has happened in Gujarat, it has happened in Orissa, it has happened in Kerala & Karnataka, it is happening in Jammu & Kashmir, it has now been imported in Mangalore and the latest in the list now is Orissa once again.

While the politicians, administrators & trouble makers are thoroughly insulated, it is the innocent, weak & vulnerable, whose blood is shed in the name of religion. Even if a small section of the populace is responsible, why is the large majority silent.

Our country has 'produced' the maximum number of Gods & Godmen who rome the globe preaching peace & harmony. Yet peace & prosperity evades their own beloved land. What an irony!

Condemn the act that was carried out at night. But do not condemn anyone right now until you know the whole truth. Even when you know the truth, do not condemn anyone. Who knows the people who have done this damage may repent by the time the truth is out and we should not condemn a repentant person.

Pray that these people may repent and restore the damage that is done as an act of repentance. Here in Nairobi, I am sharing my house with a friend who is a devout Hindu. He says his prayers everyday. I say my Rosary everyday. Not once did we have any sort of tension between us on account of our religious beliefs.

We are staying in a Muslim colony. Our Landlord is a Muslim. We had no problems at all on account of our religion. God willing, we shall not have any problems either in future.God Bless Mangalore. God Bless India!

Those who have done damage must repent and ask God to pardon them. Responsible administrators and judicial authorities should probe into this episode and punish the miscreants, so that, such shameful acts are not to be repeated again. It is the responsibility of parents to teach their children about harmony and respect towards other religions. Some sick minded people are doing the cowardly acts which ruin the peace of Mangalore. This is a cowardly act conducted under the cover of darkness. I think we all know who the culprits are, so there's no use trying to hope the culprits weren't the obvious crowd of fanatics that have had a free run of the region. All said and done, what next? I am a bit sceptical of the police apprehending the culprits, as they have the 'right' connections all the way to the top. Let us forgive them, but let us not get into the habit of forgetting easily.

We may wish that it doesn't happen again, but let us not be foolish and pretend that the next assault won't occur. Whoever is perturbed by the incident or is unduly worried need only look at history for answers. St Peter and his disciples too faced persecution and were martyred at the hands of the Romans. Ultimately, what happened to Nero and the way of life of ancient Romans is history. All we need is faith and courage and God will do the rest.

There is nothing to get excited or carried away on this issue. These are routine things that are happening in Mangalore. A place once known for peace and harmony is on top of the list for bringing up relegious disputes. This shows how immature and uneducated we are to the rest.

Mangalore once known for bringing up highest number of engineers every year is now famous for creating highest number of genious master minds to create religious hatred. Its a shame for me to call myself a Mangalorean. There are plans of making Mangalore a marketing hub but i dont think so this can happen in lifetime. Unless we Mangaloreans change our outlook and way of thinking we can never come up. Stop developing unrest among relegions.

It all began with the Ayodhya mosque demolition and Ram temple controversy which brought the BJP to the centrestage of national politics from a mere 2 seats in the Lok Sabha in 1984 to 180 seats in 1999 and down to 138 in 2004.

These developments emboldened the fascist elements in that party and their coherts to unleash terror on the minorities from time to time. The focus shifted from Ayodhya to Bababudangiri/Dattapeetah issue,Ram Sethu/Sethusamudram Project, the latest being the Amarnath land row. Simultaneously attacks on Christians and their institutions continued first in the BJP ruled states of Gujarath( remember the riots in Dangs district during Christmas of 1999), Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan,Chhatisgarh, semi BJP ruled state of Orissa (murder of Staines and his 2 minor sons, and the more recent anti Christian violence that shook the Kandhamal forest plateau of Orissa's Cuttack Bhubaneswar Diocese during Christmas 2007, leaving in its wake over a hundred Churches and institutions destroyed, women raped and molested, several thousand rendered homeless and at least five persons dead of wounds inflicted by the marauding gangs of the Hindutva Sangh Parivar that displaced Constitutional governance with the rule of the mob between 24 and 27 December 2007 trapping the pastoral centre in the round of violence that broke out with followers of Vishwa Hindu Parishad man Lakshmanananda Saraswati, a man with murder on his police record, attacking three Church institutions, including an orphanage and the blocking all roads in this hill terrain to show they are the real rulers.) Finally our twin districts of Udupi and DK are now on the hit list of these fascist elements .

Assault on Fr.Sylvester at Kota near Kundapur last year,on Mable Veigas at Sullia, desecration of grotto near St.Lawrence Shrine of Attur ,Karkala and the latest Bondel incident are only a few examples. Hence BEWARE! of these anti national forces out to destroy the peace, unity and integrity of our nation and the sacred tenets of our constitution which our founding fathers gave us after many a sacrifice and thought.

Why brand others as terrorists when we have terrorists in our backyard (the so called jackals –. I grew up in Mangalore in an atmosphere where there were no religious barriers. We had Hindus and Muslim neighbours, but we all lived together in harmony as brothers and sisters. The dedicated Priests and Nuns of various institutions never drove away the Hindus, denied them entry or sowed any seeds of hatred.

Shame on you for targeting the same community which provided education and medical facilities unselfishly to your brethren and never interfered in any of your religious affairs. Today you have desecrated the place of the One who bore the sins of others and died for mankind. For your information, it is next to impossible and none of the muslims are dreaming or thinking of to make you feel 'one day you are in Pakistan'. We often heard these words from hindu leaders during their firebrand speeches and intention is to make gap between the religion.

Unfortunately they have succeeded at some extent and attack on prayer center at Pacchanady is a result of this. The involved miscreants must be arrested and a good treat from police will guide them not to react again simply because we can not blame all Hindus.

Mr. Pai are you trying to say that Bajrang Dal is a peace loving & Tolerant organization. Well records speak for themselves. The BJP and its affiliates have from the start participated in religious violence and used religiously sensitive issues for political advantage and for your kind info The United States Department of State's annual report on international religious freedom and World Report (2000) by the Human Rights Watch have labeled this organization as a Hindu extremist group. Paul R. Brass, Professor Emeritus of Political Science and South Asian Studies at the University of Washington, described the Bajrang Dal as Indian equivalent of 'Nazi Germany's Sturmabteilung'.

Unfortunately educated, broad minded people of India support such extremist organizations and then they give big talks against Muslim Jehadis. My suggestion is practice what you preach.

No doubt this is a cowardy act, but please wait while playing communal cards.Just 2 years back Muslim organisation Anjuman Islam organised bomb blasts at many churches in north karnataka just to create a drift in between hundu's & christians. This might be the same propaganda. Just see those brand new bhagavadwajas, it shows they were used first time. Generally VHP RSS people reuse same flags for many occassions. More over that they make public statements or claims on such incidents. So far here no one claimed the responsibility. So don't come to a conclusion. If its done by the saffron brigade then we hindu's don't have any hesistation to condemn this act. Whoever it be we feel very sorry for hurting our chritian brothers sentiments.

Dear Lord God, ""Forgive them for they know not what they have done.."" Yes this is befitting the situation. Whoever has done it has surely done a rediculous act. Just like any other religion, we Catholics also have a right to practice our religion & we DO NOT DO THIS KIND OF ACT WITH OTHER RELIGIONS ?? So why should some body else walk up to our worship place & do this un pardonable act?? Why do we always mix RELIGION with POLITICS?? Why sould the Dirty Politics enter all walks of life, like Religion today, may be daily life practice tomorrow.. In a country like ours where we have the freedom of speech, freedom of religion, do we MIS USE OUR FREEDOM TO DO SOME THING LIKE THIS WHICH IS SHAMEFUL. This act is an attack on Catholic Religious Sentiments. God above will punish them no doubt, but how will the concerned authorities punish the miscreants is what we will wait n watch....!! But I think it's time we realise we are targetted as a minority community...& taken for granted for our soft n forgiving nature..

It is shame on these miscreants who placed "bhagavadhwaja" near the catholic prayer hall and damaging grotto, symbol of Mother. Better not to point finger to anybody. This is Kalee Yuga and what you sow, you will reap in this life only. Request the Hindu leaders to remove the "bhagavadhwaja" and remove the doubt existed in the mind of christians. This act of yours will build the bridges among communities without hurting anybody.

The people who do these things as such do not belong to any religion but are fanatics that can exist in any religion. Before naming any organisation and jumping into conclusions we must allow the law to take its own course. The people involved in the desecration could not be more than a handful and does not reflect the faith of any community. Before passing any verdict in haste we must understand the sentiments of other communities too. Mr Satish Kunder is right. We are all Tuluvites and secular people having friends from all religions who co-exist with each other in peace.

It clearly shows that this is the work of anti-Hindu group to create tension between Hindus and Christians. If it was Bhajarang Dal, why would they leave so many "bhagavadhwaja" in the area. Don't you see the logic? This is an old trick and we all should be smart enough to undrestand it.

Well i can say the Central Congress Government May not be Doing good to any religion but we are assured that its neither doing any harm to any religion. People donot understand that they are digging their own graves.

People wake up and know your rights, we are living in a democratic country every person has his right to Worship and no one has the right to disturb any other persons right to worship. These so called Hindu leaders are taking advantage of the soft nature of Christians.. its high time we wake up and fight for our rights...First and foremost all christians should get united...well this act that has taken place in Pacchanady needs to be condemned

After BJP rose to power, many such incidents are taking place and even it is very much disgusting to see the police becoming more and more violent towards the innocent instead of punishing the culprits. This is clearly the act of communal forces and we know who they are from the flags they have posted there. These communal parties should be banned from the Indian political system. Even in Turkey the Constitutional Court has done it. It is high time our Supreme Court the Apex body take cognizance of such offences and ban these parties.
