Beltangady, Mar 24: Two persons were killed in a tragic accident at Guripalla near Ujire here late night on Friday March 23.

The deceased have been identified as Harish (38) and Sudhir Shetty (40), both residents of Guripalla.

The two were cousins.

They were riding home when a speeding tanker approaching from the opposite direction rammed into their bike, killing them on the spot.

Eyewitnesses said that after hitting the bike, the tanker dragged away the cousins for about 10 to 20 feet.

Beltangady traffic police have registered a case against tanker driver Pushparaj, charging him of reckless driving.

Harish got married about three years ago. He was working in a hotel in Ujire. He is survived by his mother, wife, a one-and-a-half-year-old daughter and a brother who lives in Mumbai. Harish had earlier been working in Mumbai, but after marriage had shifted to his hometown Ujire.

It is said that every day, Harish used to come home from work by auto rickshaw, but on Friday night, he took a ride with his cousin Sudhir.

Sudhir too was staying in Mumbai with his wife and two daughters, earning a living by selling betel leaves. He had come home just 15 days ago. A house is under construction here for his younger brother and mother. Sudhir was supposed to return to Mumbai on Friday night, but for some reason his bus ticket was booked for Saturday night.

The final rites will be conducted on Saturday night after family members arrive in town, sources said.
