Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Mar 22: Laxman Nimbargi, superintendent of police (SP) of Udupi has issued a public notice requesting the public to follow the guidelines mentioned in the notice to prevent cyber and social sites related crimes.

The points mentioned in the notice are as follows:

-If any stranger calls you on your mobile and says that he or she is a bank officer and speaking from the head office of the bank and asks you to renew your ATM card saying that its validity is over and if not renewed the card will get blocked and asks you to provide the 16 digit card number and the three digit card security verification (CSV), please do not provide the same. You must contact the branch of your bank where you have your account. Beware of people who cheat after obtaining the card number and CSV number.

Laxman Nimbargi

-Do not fall prey to email, SMS messages or calls on your mobile saying that you have won a lottery or jackpot and you need to pay a certain amount as tax.

-Under any circumstances do not provide your Aadhar card number or OTP (one-time password) to anyone who might call you on the pretext that your mobile and Aadhar card is not linked.

-Beware of people who will befriend you on Facebook or WhatsApp posing as foreigners and saying that they have come on a visit to India and are at the airport and do not have Indian currency to pay for the customs department. Such fraudsters will request you to send Indian currency and promise that they will pay back once they exchange the foreign currency after the customs procedure.

-Beware of people who will call you and pose as officers of GST or IT department and say that you have excess money than the allowed legal limit in your account. We will conduct a raid on your house. Provide me your bank account number, ATM card number, pin number, Aadhar card number and the OTP number. Once they get all the details, they will transfer the money to their account.

-Beware of cheaters who will advertise on email or social sites saying that they will provide goods at a lower price than the market and ask you to send the money and provide you with duplicate goods.

-Beware of web hackers, who promise of providing government employment and ask you to transfer money through online.

-Beware of tricksters who introduce themselves as representatives of a finance company and the promise of providing a loan at very low-interest rates and ask you to keep some money as a deposit in their finance company.

-Before inserting your ATM card in the machine to withdraw money, observe the place and see that no other instrument is fixed on the machine. Also stand close to the machine and see that your pin number is not observed by others and also the CCTV camera.

-Make use of ATM machines where there is a security guard.

-Use the ATM card with the chip that is provided by the bank. Use the mobile app that has ATM pin security only after consulting the concerned officers in the bank.

-When transferring or paying money through Paytm, make sure that the address of the person and the mobile he or she uses is proper

-Every citizen has to be cautious not to post articles of personal abuse, derogatory nature, posts that provoke society and porn pictures of videos on Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and Twitter. Legal action will be taken on people who will indulge in these activities.

-Posting of live photos of the places when we are on vacation has become a social status indicator now. However, it should be noted that burglars scrutinize such posts and rob the houses. Everyone should be alert to this fact.

Very well done by Police Dept. in trying to educate our gullible populace of coastal karnataka (albeit a little late). I think it has summed up all the scams that have been finding place regularly in our newspapers in the past 2 years. Even well educated people fall prey to such scams. Request everyone to educate your family members, neighbours and friends. These guidelines can be considered as "Dummies guidebook to avoid getting scammed".
