Bengaluru, Mar 19: Pope Francis has appointed Msgr Peter Machado, until now Bishop of Belgaum, as the new Archbishop of Bengaluru.
Pope Francis who has accepted the resignation of hitherto Archbishop Dr Bernard Blasius Moras from the pastoral care of the Archdiocese of Bengaluru. He has appointed Dr Peter Machado in his place according to the provisions of Canon Law.
Dr Bernard Moras will remain as Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese until the day of the canonical taking possession of the new Archbishop.
This provision was made public in Rome on Monday, March 19.
About Archbishop Dr Peter Machado
Bishop Peter Machado was born on May 26, 1954, in Honnavar, which at the time was in Belgaum diocese. He was ordained a priest on December 8, 1978, for the diocese of Karwar, which had been created as a diocese separate from Belgaum two years earlier.
He was appointed Bishop of Belgaum on February. 2, 2006, and was ordained bishop on March 30 that year. Prior to his Episcopal appointment, he completed doctoral studies in Rome in Canon Law and served as procurator, judicial vicar, consulter and secretary of the Karnataka regional bishops' Laity Commission, based in Bengaluru.
