Hassan, Mar 18: JD(S) supremo and former Prime Minister, H D Deve Gowda, joined the opponents of Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) and fully supported their demand to go back to the system of exercising franchise through ballots. "Why is the Election Commission doggedly supporting EVMs although there are doubts about their reliability and authenticity?" he questioned.
Speaking at a press meet on Saturday March 17 in the town, Deve Gowda noted that several countries have gone back to using ballot papers after having bad experience with EVMs. "While several countries have discarded EVMs after getting numerous complaints, why is the election commission hell bent on continuing with these machines although complaints are coming in large numbers against them?" he wondered.
Deve Gowda recollected that T N Seshan, who was functioning as Chief Election Commissioner of India in the past, had opted to use EVMs in the place of ballots to bring reforms in elections. He stated that EVMs used in Gujarat state election have been brought into Karnataka for the assembly poll.
A scribe raised a question to Gowda about the amount of compensation payable to family members of CRPF Jawan from Arkalgud taluk who was killed recently in attack by Naxals in Chhattisgarh, Gowda said that the family will get total compensation of Rs 90 lac from different sources. He assured to talk to the concerned if disbursement of compensation gets unduly delayed. He promised to visit the family soon and disburse some compensation on behalf of the party.
Gowda said that after the conclusion of the coming election, he will devote most of his time to the constituency. "I will keep meeting and interacting with people lest I will go mad. Because of this nature of mine, former chief minister, Ramakrishna Hegde, used to address me as '24-hour politician," he recollected.
